Every single winter I face the same challenge: finding a decent black winter coat that keeps me warm and fits around my hips without drowning me in every other way. For all the bias cut midi dresses that flatter my figure that are abundant on the high street, there’s a straight cut style with not-a-sausage amount of room for even a slither of a curve. Why hasn’t the fashion industry cottoned on to the fact that women need coats that elegantly skim over their hips? Why is it so hard for me to find a dark coat that does up without the buttons straining? Sizing up isn’t a problem, and something I’ve naturally become accustomed to if I want to wear more than a t-shirt underneath, but I don’t want to look like I’m a child playing dress up in a garment three sizes too big just to get the zip up! It’s a very real problem, and I’m sure I’m not alone in facing it…
So after trying on about fifty different coats and scrolling through hundreds more online, I was ready to give up the ghost for yet another year and settle for what was already in my closet. That was, until I was taking an unexpected wander through Primark and stumbled across this beautifully cosy and actually pretty flattering fake fur coat. Even better, the price tag was a very reasonable £30.00.
Thanks to the oversized cut and chunky style, it doesn’t look or feel like it’s too big even if I’m wearing an XL. It’s so soft that my husband actually started stroking me and remarked that it felt like our dog just after he’d had a shower (that’s a compliment FYI!) Hitting just above my knee (I’m 5ft4) it’s great for chucking over a midi dress to add a bit of texture, works perfectly to dress up jeans and a jumper, and is just what I need from a ‘going out out’ cover up – style and substance. It’s been my daily go-to in the weeks since I bought it, and I know that it will be a staple I pull out year after year with joy. There’s definitely something timeless and elegant about a fur coat; it really does suit every shape, size and age.
I’m so glad I discovered this cosy winter coat, even if it wasn’t necessarily in the place I intended.
I’ve definitely moved away from shopping in Primark in favour of more investment pieces over the last few years, but it still has a special place in my heart for affordable fashion that really makes an impact. My approach is definitely ‘less is more’, and I find myself buying pieces I know I’ll get so much wear out of that my guilt for shopping fast fashion is somewhat subsided; we all know that in an ideal world we’d all shop sustainable and only update our wardrobes twice a year, but I love fashion and I have to shop with brands that cater to my size and shape. Thankfully Primark is one of them, but that doesn’t mean I’m dropping a fortune in there every other week and sending half of it to charity shops the next – I cherish each little gem I find and get as much wear out of it as I possibly can.
