Makeover Your Makeup Bag In 5 Easy Steps

PLUS HOW TO GET 80% OFF THE LUXE CLEAN, CRUELTY-FREE,
PETA-CERTIFIED ‘NUDE BY NATURE’ MAKEUP BRAND

Our makeup bags can be places of wonder and magic, but they can also be places full to the brim with old, broken, out of date and out of style products. Often we get so swept up in the day to day process of applying and sticking to our tried and tested routine, that the practicalities of the contents get forgotten altogether.

Research by Aston University, in a test of over 500 products from women’s makeup bags, found: “bacteria that can cause illnesses ranging from skin infections to blood poisoning if used near eyes, mouth or cuts or grazes… in nine out of ten of the products.” Can I get an ewwwww?

A hotbed of dirt and a breeding ground for germs, it’s always a good idea to give your makeup bag a little once over and start afresh knowing everything inside is providing exactly what you need it to. So if you’ve got a little time on your hands, why not makeover your makeup bag in these five easy steps and rediscover your love for your morning routine?

Makeover Your Makeup Bag In 5 Easy Steps

1. GIVE IT A CLEAN
First up, let’s get down and dirty; foundation smudges, little pools of powder and pencil sharpenings from your fave eyeliner aren’t going to do you any good. Emptying everything out and cleaning it with a flannel and warm soapy water will not only give it a refresh and ensure good hygiene, but it allows you to see exactly what you’ve got to play with. I like to also use a bit of anti-bac spray every so often to know I’m killing off any potentially troublesome bacteria that can cause inflammation and breakouts when transferred to the face.

2. THROW OUT OLD PRODUCTS
How long has that bottle of mascara been open? When did you buy that expensive bottle of foundation that’s only been used once? Beauty products have ‘best before dates’ just like the contents of your fridge, so it’s vital that you keep an eye on how long they’ve been lingering in your makeup bag – and even more important to throw out anything that’s way past its best.

On every product packaging there’s a little jar and a number (known as a PAO or Period After Opening number) that shows how long it’s good to use after you’ve first opened it; this is usually anywhere from 3 to 24 months. If you can’t remember how long you’ve been using it and the texture is starting to look a bit off, it’s always a good idea to chuck it out and start afresh; and for all future purchases, use a Sharpie marker to write the date on the base so you can keep track!

3. LOOK AT WHAT YOU HAVE
We’ve all found ourselves buying yet another concealer or a fifth bronzer because we can’t locate our faves, but having a good sort through will allow you to see where you have duplicates and where there are gaps. Maybe those five bronzers are all hitting the pan, or those three concealers are well beyond their PAO number, but you won’t know until you have a good look. You may also find 17 nude lipglosses and know you don’t need to buy another for the foreseeable too, saving you money in the long term!

4. STOCK UP ON WHAT YOU NEED
Now is the time to fill in the gaps and replace old favourites, as well as thinking about what you truly need. Whether your old foundation texture isn’t working for the season, or you’ve suddenly fallen in love with glittery eyeshadow, it’s time to have some fun… (And scroll on if you want to know how to save 80% off some incredible makeup products I know you’ll love!)

5. RE-ASSESS WHAT WORKS FOR YOU
As we age our skin texture changes, our needs evolve and our tastes transition. The makeup that worked beautifully for me as a 20-something definitely doesn’t hit the spot a decade on, so I’ve changed up the products in my portfolio over time – knowing I can be comfortable that I’m quickly and easily able to create the looks I love. Have a think about the colours you actually use and the shades that work for you, the textures that seem like a great idea but in practical terms just don’t cut it, or the steps that you never seem to have time for; clearing away the clutter and only having on hand what you need and use will make the world of difference on a day to day basis.

I loved reading this blog post! I recently went through and cleaned my makeup bag, along with every single item in my makeup collection. It was lengthy, but so satisfying once I’d finished! I definitely have an issue with hoarding makeup products. I have 20 nude lipsticks that I know I’ll never finish. I seriously have to start chucking things out and only stick to the products I truly love and reach for all of the time. Thanks for your helpful tips, as always x
