I may long for the summer months as soon as my jumpers have had their second wash of the season, but dressing for the warmer weather comes with all manner of problematic anxieties – especially if you’re older than 23 and bigger than a size 10. Chaffing skin and rubbing shoes, exposing bingo wings and chunky bra straps, keeping cool without flashing the flesh, looking elegant while trying not to sweat like a pig… Honestly, sometimes it’s hard to even pick out an outfit of a morning.
But there is one solution that’s become my go-to over the years, and it’s one I have so many duplicates of because it’s just such a fail-safe option: the white cotton midi dress.
It suits every style, size and age. It never goes out of style. You can dress it up or dress it down.
To be honest, apart from transport you to a tropical location, there’s nothing it can’t do.
It keeps you cool when the sun is shining down, but it keeps you covered up enough to protect against the chill when the sun slips behind a cloud; it’s also the one style that sees me through all the way from spring to autumn without feeling under or overdressed when the weather suddenly changes. Told you you needed a white cotton midi dress…
This white cotton midi dress is last year’s H&M but it’s still a firm favourite and a wardrobe staple that comes out more often than I care to admit (even at the moment when the furthest I go is the field or the supermarket.) It’s so floaty and flattering that it’s my go-to even on the hottest of days, keeping the air flowing around my nether regions and my body feeling cool. It skims over my hips and accommodates my chest, which to be honest are my main requirements of a decent summer dress, but doesn’t feel like I’m wearing something frumpy.
I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve got many different versions of the same piece: some without sleeves, some with short capped sleeves, some with straps, some with buttons, some with embroidery, some with big pockets and some with a stiffer fabric to provide a more structured look.
But one things for sure – my love for a white cotton midi dress will never falter.
