We may only be half way through the winter months, but I’m already sick and tired of my day-to-day jean-and-jumper combo. When you work from home and spend every morning in a muddy field walking the dog, your wardrobe choices are narrowed down to what’s comfortable, practical and you don’t mind getting covered in dirt; it seems silly to put on a dress just to sit at my desk, or to bother to style up a decent look just to pop to Costa, so this time of year I’m mostly found hibernating between cosy layers. But when I do get an opportunity to be sociable or do something more exciting than taking a trip to Lidl, you bet I’m gonna be as overdressed as I can get away with… And that’s where my mantra ‘just add velvet’ comes in.
Taking a perfectly lovely (but otherwise not particularly groundbreaking) dress* and spicing it up with a touch of colour and texture helps to instantly transform it into something that feels all the more luxurious. Yes a pair of white trainers and a biker jacket would go just as well, but if you can’t wear a burgundy velvet blazer and a teal velvet Gucci bag just because you feel like it then what’s the point?
I’ve wanted a velvet blazer jacket for the longest time, but often they can swamp my short frame or look out of proportion with my curves. Marks & Spencer came to the rescue though, offering a super luxe jacket* in a lightweight fabric that doesn’t look heavy when draped over the shoulders – nor does it feel still when worn on the body; it’s the stuff of my velvet dreams and I’ve worn it so many times over the festive season (my favourite look of which was over a gold sparkly dress.)
Paired with a light grey suede boot*, also from Marks & Spencer, keeps the overall look feeling fun and suitable for day or night. These boots look and feel so much more than their £75.00 price tag (now only £31.00 in the sale!) and I’ve been wearing them with skirts, dresses and jeans for weeks; they’ll be the perfect addition come spring, when you still want a boot to keep your toes warm but the dark shades in your closet feel too heavy against new season colours and fabrics.
My beloved Gucci Marmont bag brings a pop of colour and works with the velvet of the blazer, while a little pearl hair slide and small silver hoop earrings are my finishing touches.
Swapping in the dress is all I need to do to give this look a new lease of life, and I’ve found a go-to transitional outfit.
