Our day-to-day lives have never been more stressful, and stressed skin has never been as common. Connectivity brings with it the ability to do your job wherever you are in the world and to stay informed about what loved ones are up to, but it also brings with it a culture of being constantly ‘switched on’; the majority of us are almost surgically attached to our phones, working from the moment we awake to the moment we switch off the bedside light, while social media has bred a culture of competitive comparison. We can easily find ourselves maxed out and running on empty, trying to tick off as many things as possible, juggling family life and social commitments alongside our working week, while documenting it all on Instagram for the approval of others – and that’s stressful.

But did you know stress causes a chemical response within your body that not only causes tension, but can also make skin more sensitive and reactive? If you’ve ever noticed your skin is puffier, duller, oilier, dryer or more prone to breakouts when you’re stressed, that reaction is totally normal and increasingly common; stress causes a surge in cortisol production, which can trigger an increase in oil production, aggravate skin conditions such as psoriasis and rosacea, and even cause rashes, hives and blisters. The signs of stress on skin are not to be overlooked.

Nobody wants to see the results of a stressful week on their face, so how can you tackle these changes and de-stress your skin so it’s left glowing and radiant?

Half of the battle comes from knowing the situations that put your skin under extra stress, and having a battle plan to stop them playing havoc with your complexion. It could be late nights or early mornings, poor diet, lack of exercise, improper cleansing, or just the general business that comes with a diary that’s bursting at the seams – but knowing when to stop and give yourself a break is the key to success. For me, it’s lack of sleep that really stresses out my skin (closely followed by not drinking enough water or eating too many carbs,) so on those days I’ve not had the benefit of eight solid hours between the sheets I ramp up my skincare regime to re-establish balance.

Counteract the dryness that’s often a key sign of stress by ensuring you don’t skip on your morning and evening moisturiser; in fact, even when skin appears oily it’s always a good idea to ensure deep hydration: it’s often the lack of moisture that’s at the root cause, as our bodies try to counteract the lack of lubrication by increasing oil production. Clever huh?

A rich, nourishing moisturiser such as Jurlique’s Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Moisturising Cream (£55.00) will help to hydrate, comfort and protect skin when it’s most vulnerable – thanks to the inclusion of Rose Hip and Evening Primrose Oils (both natural sources of essential fatty acids,) Shea Butter and botanical extracts grown on their organic farm to soothe and calm delicate skin. It not only smells amazing, but it’s non-greasy and leaves my skin feeling super supple; it works both as a day cream and night moisturiser too, ensuring you can invest wisely in your regime.

Adding a revitalising yet soothing facial mist into your daily routine will also help you to refresh, hydrate and comfort skin on the go; Jurlique’s Calendula Redness Rescue Calming Mist (£35.00) contains Calendula (known for its ability to re-balance the skin,) Aloe Vera and Echinacea Extract (for calming and hydrating properties) as well as Cucumber to soothe and refresh the senses. I love this as a final step in the morning, or as a finishing touch over makeup, but it’s also great for popping in your bag and spritzing throughout the day: an instant pick-me-up in a bottle for stressed skin.

I’m a firm believer in facial massage, especially when skin is looking or feeling stressed. With over 300 pressure points on the face alone, a five minute massage can help to stimulate the muscles and lymphatic system to lift, tone and drain away puffiness – leaving your skin feeling fresher, plumper, brighter and altogether less tired. The eye area in particular can benefit from a quick morning massage, helping to drain away those dark circles and leave you feeling energised, and using an eye cream such as Jurlique’s Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Cream (£42.00) is just the ticket.

Harnessing potent botanical ingredients alongside Silk Tree extract, this lightweight but hydrating eye cream is formulated to help minimise the appearance of fine lines, firm the skin, and address puffiness to leave the eye area looking firmer and brighter. Although I’ve been skipping eye cream for the last few months, this has been a welcome re-introduction and definitely helps to stop me looking and feeling so knackered. (Interested in facial massage? Taking a little time out from your week to look after yourself has the power to re-balance, re-energise and de-stress, so it shouldn’t be overlooked. If you’re wondering how to pamper your skin at home, than a simple 30 minute soak in the tub, a face mask and body buff, or a cup of tea and a good book can really work wonders; Jurlique’s Rose Moisture Plus Moisturising Cream Mask (£35.00) is a super simple yet effective way to take ten, helping to boost hydration and replenish the skin with botanical oils and Shea Butter. If you don’t have the time to pop it on while having a bath, just massage a generous layer over skin after cleansing and let it soak in pre-bedtime for an added hit of goodness without the time constraint. It’s incredibly versatile and leaves my skin feeling super perky.

I’m all about getting in my PJs and slipping between the sheets early when I’m feeling knackered and stressed; getting into bedtime mode helps your brain to settle and your body to unwind, ensuring you can easily slip off to sleep when you’re ready. We’re all pretty au fait with lavender pillow sprays, but have you thought about adding a Lavender Hydrating Mist into your regime too?

Jurlique’s lightweight mist helps to hydrate the skin, soothe the senses and calm the skin so you can glow from within; skin is not only left looking radiant and feeling soft, but the scent instantly calms and soothes the mind – perfect for helping to relax your mind before bed. I’ve become a little obsessed with this, taking time to spritz on and breathe in the scent after I’ve applied either the Cream Mask or Soothing Moisturising Cream; a few deep breaths really helps to wash away the day’s stresses and get me in the zone.

Although there’s nothing that compares to a week away from it all, or just taking the time to remove as much stress from your life as possible, if that’s simply not an option then treating your skin with kindness and making small changes will really help to de-stress your skin and leave your complexion feeling revitalized.

The next time you can feel the stress of day-to-day life getting to you, and your skin, why not take this five step approach and see what difference it can make to you?

I’ve never tried any Jurlique products before! I definitely need some rich hydration though, especially as winter is on its way. I’ll definitely check these out in person.
