HOW TO CREATE PERFECT BROWS & FILL IN YOUR IDEAL SHAPE
AD | SPONSORED FEATURE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH JML’S EYEBROW MAGIC BROW PEN
Looking back at old photos of myself, one thing sticks out more than the dodgy 90’s fashion and at-home highlighting kits that tinted my hair a nice shade of tangerine: those tadpole brows. I’ve not been blessed in the eyebrow department, my natural shape being somewhat uneven and sparse, but the late 90’s trend to pluck left them looking even more dire; it wasn’t an area of beauty I really spent that much time thinking about until a handful of makeup artists advised me to start shaping and filling them in. As soon as I could see the difference a strong browline made to my overall face shape, my brow game became a top priority.
Over the last five years I’ve spent a huge amount of time, money and effort testing out all manner of waxes, pens, powders and pencils to find the products that work for me – because creating a subtle arch and a beautifully full brow can make all the difference to the rest of your face. Not only does it help to lift the features, but it helps to take years off your face (our brows tend to be at their fullest in our younger years,) while helping you look fresh and awake (the perfect antidote to a bad night’s sleep!) Bolder, fuller and more defined brows have also never been more on-trend, so paying close attention to those two little slices of hair can make all the difference to your look.
If you’ve always dreamed of transforming your eyebrows, wondered ‘how do I create perfect brows?’ or simply have been intrigued by those that seem to nail their brow look every time, there are some simple and easy steps you can take to transform your brows in seconds…
STEP 1: SHAPE & REMOVE UNWANTED HAIR
I always find it really useful to either visit a brow technician for a session of threading and waxing, or to use my own tweezers and brow blade to remove peach fuzz and rogue hairs at home. This will help to create a more defined outline, aid the application of your products and ensure your end result is perfect.
STEP 2: FIND YOUR NATURAL STARTING POINT
Place a makeup brush along the side of your nose to find where your brows should ideally start; where the end touches the brow bone is where you should be drawing from, even if this means creating hair where there is none. The same goes for the other end: angle the brush from the outside of your nose to the outer corner of your eye to find where your brows should ideally end.
STEP 3: BRUSH & SMOOTH YOUR BROWS
Using a spoolie brush (basically a mascara wand without the mascara!) comb through and brush hair slightly upwards, allowing you to see where there are any gaps and where you want your brows to sit. I personally like to comb through just to ensure it’s easier to create a fuller brow line with my chosen product – and it really does make all the difference.
STEP 4: CHOOSE YOUR COLOUR MATCH
When choosing your product, try to find the closest shade to your natural brows (or go a little darker if you prefer.) This will ensure the colour blends effortlessly and looks as natural as possible; if you have sparse or patchy brows like me, opting for a darker shade will enable you to create perfect brows more easily.
STEP 5: PICK THE PERFECT PRODUCT
Whether you’re completely new to filling in your brows or consider yourself an expert, JML’s Eyebrow Magic is a super natural way to create definition and colour. The quad tip mimics the effect of microblading, effectively creating hairs that aren’t there, allowing you to enhance your natural brow shape by providing depth, shape and colour in one swipe of the pen. Not only is it smudge-proof and long-lasting (offering up to 24 hours wear,) but the comb-like design of the tip mimics hair to ensure the result is super effortless and natural looking. Available in three shades (dark brown, auburn and dark blonde,) it’s also super affordable (only £9.99) and perfectly compact – perfect for on-the-go.
STEP 6: APPLY IN SHORT STROKES
To achieve the best result, always apply your product in short and sharp strokes and build up the result; it’s always easier to add more layers and colour than it is to take them away when it feels too much. The JML Eyebrow Magic pen is best used from the inside corner to the tip of the brow, starting from the bottom and flicking upwards to create a slightly messy look (to ensure it looks natural.) I like to create definition around the edges first with the thinnest side of the pen, going back to create hairs where there aren’t any from the inside out; the trick isn’t to hold the pen too hard or for too long, instead lifting it away quickly and creating lots of little strokes for a more natural finish. You’ll create perfect brows in no time!
I’ve been putting the Eyebrow Magic pen from JML to the test over the past few weeks, and it’s such an effortless addition to my makeup bag. I’ve had my brows microbladed a number of times, but the cost and time taken to keep them topped up can be quite prohibitive; although this can’t compete with a professional treatment, it is a great way to add really natural looking ‘hairs’ and create an overall look that feels beautifully understated. Unlike other products that can leave a very flat and singular-colour brow look behind, this looks and feels much closer to my own brows and a great way to boost the appearance of thickness in only a few seconds. The answer to the question ‘how do I create perfect brows?’ really is that easy.
Great brows really are at your fingertips.
The Eyebrow Magic pen from JML is available online, priced £9.99, as well as in selected stores.

FYI I’ve been using dark brown, which is a good match for my colouring, but I hope they’ll soon add darker tones too for a bolder result (and to cover off darker skin tones!)
