Our lashes may serve a very basic function (keeping dust and dirt away from our delicate eyes,) but the beauty industry has made billions from selling us the ideal of full and long flutters; a great lashline is possibly the number one desire of most makeup-loving women, because it really does have the power to open up an otherwise tired looking face. We’re actually programmed to attribute wide eyes and lots of lashes to youth, so it’s no surprise that a great budget mascara is the holy grail for many of us looking to create a fresh-faced glow every morning.
Over the years I’ve tried hundreds, if not thousands, of different mascaras ranging from super budget to super premium – but in my opinion you can rarely get better than good old Maybelline. They’ve been my default for as long as I can remember, always finding their way back into my makeup bag and cementing their position as a long-term fave; when I recently opened up my mascara drawer (yep, I have *that* much makeup) to find no fewer than four Maybelline mascaras within my rotation, I thought it was probably a good idea to bring you the lowdown on each and why I think they’re such a great budget mascara buy.
Not only do they all cost only £8.99, but each is designed to deliver something a little different – so if you’re wondering where to start, here are (IMO) the four best budget mascaras from Maybelline and what I think they’re best suited for.
Maybelline The Falsies Volume Express Mascara (£8.99)
A really great mascara if you’re scared of overdoing it, this features a no-clump formula that easily builds to leave lashes looking fuller and longer without the bulk. The patented curved bristle brush is flexible too, allowing you to coat each lash from root-to-tip and corner-to-corner for a full ‘false lash’ effect without any glue; you really can ‘lift’ your lashes for a result that’s almost comparable to an eyelash curler (but probably not enough if you’re a full-on addict.) Although this can’t compare with a set of falsies, it’s a great all round mascara that I’d wear every day with ease.
BEST FOR: length, lift and subtle volume
Maybelline Colossal Platimum Black Mascara (£8.99)
One for the traditional mascara wand lovers, this bristle brush helps to deliver lots of length and volume without weighing down your lashline; it picks up a decent amount of product, allowing you to coat the length of lashes without any clumping. If you’re a long-term Maybelline mascara lover then this is probably the most old-school in design, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less effective – I’d recommend this in a heartbeat.
BEST FOR: lots of volume, length and subtle definition
Maybelline Colossal Big Shot Volume Express Mascara (£8.99)
A long-term fave of mine (I actually wrote about my love for it two years ago here) this delivers everything I want in one tube; the collagen rich formula helps to deliver tonnes of volume without any clumping, while the brush helps to lengthen lashes for serious wow factor. It separates lashes without leaving them feeling spidery, while the volume result is possibly the best I’ve ever gotten from a budget mascara. If you’re not a fan of a big brush though, this may not be for you: the bristles are quite stumpy allowing for lots of product pick up, so it can take some getting used to. The fact I’m on my fifth tube says all you need to know though…
BEST FOR: tonnes of volume and lots of length
Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara (£8.99)
Plastic brushes tend to be a bit ‘love it or hate it’ but I think this mascara bridges the cap beautifully between bristle and moulded. It’s curved to help coat every lash and subtly lift as you apply, delivering a decent amount of product that helps to separate and define. One side features very short bristles to help create a subtle liner effect while helping to coat lower lashes, while the other side features longer bristles to help lengthen and create volume – the key to this is having a play around to find what works for you. A great buy, whatever your usual preference.
BEST FOR: separation, lift, definition and subtle volume
