This Is Why I Have So Many White Midi Dresses…

Do you have one item of clothing that you find yourself reverting back to again and again? Is there one thing in your wardrobe you find yourself being drawn to so much that you have duplicates, each offering some minor point of difference that nobody but you would even notice? It may be breton striped tees or a good pair of black boots; perhaps it’s grey jumpers or the perfect fit of stonewashed blue jeans, but for me it’s undoubtedly the white midi dress. Currently hanging in my wardrobe there are no fewer than five variations on the classic and elegant style, but that didn’t stop me adding to my collection with this beaut new H&M number just in time for summer. So why are white midi dresses such a go to?

Our British springtime is always a bit unpredictable, often showcasing all four seasons in the space of a day, so it can be more than a little tricky to know what to wear; similarly, the latter months often find themselves lagging behind and delivering somewhat of an Indian Summer so those strappy cotton dresses can feel misplaced if you don’t time their outing just right. A white midi dress, on the other hand, provides an easy transition from one season to the next without leaving you feeling inappropriately dressed: the light cotton fabric and block of colour feels perfectly suited to warmer days, but the length and style keeps you covered up enough for when it turns a little chilly.

Although this is no doubt designed to be a summer dress, I wore it to the theatre with a biker jacket when the nights were still chilly; as the weather warms up I’ll be styling it with a simple pair of flats or sandals and a basket bag too – because that’s the beauty of these versatile wardrobe must-haves. There’s no need to over accessorise or worry about what you should be styling it with, because when you’re wearing a white midi dress it does all the talking for you; I’m all about pieces you can chuck on without much thought and feel like you’ve made an effort, and this is the ultimate lazy-girl embodiment of that. The elasticated waist stops it from being shapeless and frumpy, while the billowing skirt and sleeves keep it feeling elegant and timeless – there’s nothing I don’t love about it! A wise investment that I know I’ll be wearing year after year.
