If your hair is anything like mine, you know the pain of having to cut off that tatty last inch while wishing it would grow just that little bit longer. I’m in a constant cycle of wanting to grow my hair out and losing patience with the process, chopping it off just so the ends look way healthier and the overall appearance is much fuller; the difference a fresh blunt cut can make on your hair is great, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If I had my way I’d be able to leave my hair longer between salon visits to get a little extra growth, or be able to maintain the condition so well at home that I’m not forking out a small fortune on treatments and intensive conditioners alongside my 8-weekly cut. Which is where some very handy and effective hair repair treatments come in that have really provided the helping hand I crave: these great hair repair treatments really have and will help me grow my locks that one inch longer…
Michael Van Clarke LifeSaver Pre-Wash Treatment* (£29.00)
I’ve used this treatment before and saw a big difference in the condition of my hair after a couple of months, so it’s something I’ve started to take up again following a trip to the Michael Van Clarke salon in Marylebone. The premise of this pre-wash treatment is simple: apply it to hair for a minimum of 45 mins and let the goodness soak in before your usual shampoo and conditioner regime. It helps to restore broken bonds, infuse your hair with moisture and protect from further damage, leaving hair feeling supple, shiny and soft after only a couple of uses.
Because the super-fine protein amino acids are almost identical to human hair molecules, they drive deep into the hair shaft to help combat the detremental effects of heat styling and general modern living to give you the hair you crave. I use this overnight a couple of times a week for maximum effect, but you can also just pop a few pumps through the lengths of hair and pin it up while you get on with your day – because it’s non-greasy and easily absorbed, you won’t even scare the postman!
Living Proof PHD Night Cap Overnight Protector* (£30.00)
A super lightweight treatment that’s quick to dry so your head doesn’t hit the pillow sodden, this works to revitalise dry, unruly and coarse hair to leave locks looking much healthier and feeling soft. Formulated with Living Proof’s patented Healthy Hair Molecule and cuticle sealing technology, protective amino acids help keep hair safe from everyday pollutants and heat styling, while the cuticle sealing technology works to help hair appear shiny and full of life.
You just apply a few pumps to the lengths and ends of hair before bed and let it get to work as you sleep; as soon as I wash my hair it feels a lot smoother; Living Proof claim that the benefits last up to five washes, but I do use it at least once a week to get the results I want. What’s interesting is that it contains time release conditioners so you get maximum benefit over your eight hours in bed, plus it works to lock colour in hair so it looks luscious for longer.
Olaplex No3 Hair Perfector (£24.00)
I’d heard so much about this online and from other bloggers who rave about it, so I bought into the hype and ordered a couple of bottles to try myself. Although the price is high considering the size of the bottle (it’s only 100ml) you actually don’t need a huge amount as a little does go a long way – I’ve only got about a third of the way through the bottle after three uses. The benefit of this is that you don’t have to leave it on for a long time to reap the tangible benefits, as ten minutes provides an instant smoothing and softening effect; you can leave it on for longer for a more intense result, or overnight if you can’t be arsed to make the time in the morning!
What’s special about Olaplex is that the formula seeks out broken bonds in the hair and permanently rebuilds the damaged disulphide bonds (which can be compromised as a result of colour or heat styling.) I wasn’t expecting to be overwhelmed with the results, but as soon as I washed my hair I noticed a huge difference in texture and dryness; every time I use this it’s almost like a re-set button, which is why I’m now a total convert. It’s intense and almost magical stuff, which is why until recently it was only available in salons… If your hair is limp, lacklustre, dry or damaged, get yourself some of this pronto!
The same theory applies to all three of these hair treatments: look after the lengths, help repair damage and inject lots of goodness so that hair grows longer without becoming broken or split. If you get frustrated at having to cut off an inch or two every time you visit the salon, using one or more of these regularly could really help keep it to a trim so your ‘do remains long and luscious.
Why not give one of these hair repair treatments a go?
Let me know if they help improve the condition of your hair and help you grow an extra inch too!
