Long celebrated as the number one selling prestige bronzer in the UK, Benefit’s Hoola has achieved cult-like status since its launch; the recipient of many an award win, hailed a must-have by bloggers and beauty editors alike (and a best selling product to boot,) there’s no denying that Hoola is a bronzer few others can compete with. The rich tones and silky smooth texture make it a pretty universally loved makeup bag addition, and it’s one I’ve reached for every summer for as long as I can remember. But therein lies the problem: as a pasty white girl the bronzed tones often looked out of place November-April, so I swapped my box bronzer for something a lot more subtle out of peak summer season. As for darker skin tones, the generic shade of Hoola wasn’t necessarily delivering the impact they need – and in a world where diversity and representation is more important than ever, Benefit seemed to be lagging behind in providing cosmetics for more than one skin tone of woman to enjoy. Until now…
This spring sees the launch of two new additions to the Hoola* line-up: Caramel and Toasted now complement the existing original shade and Lite version (that I’ve only just discovered, despite its launch almost two years ago!) Whether you want to go all-out on your bronzing this summer, or simply want to help contour your darker complexion, these new additions make that all the more achievable. I know Benefit has come under a lot of criticism (and rightly so) for not expanding their shade range to suit every ethnicity, so here’s hoping this is the first step along their journey to rectify that; after all, every (man and) woman deserves cosmetics that make them look and feel great.
Obviously the Benefit Hoola Caramel and Toasted shades are way too dark for my pasty pale skin and can’t really be tested in a way that would be beneficial to anyone they’re relevant to, but the Hoola Lite was a new discovery for me and one I’m now utterly obsessed with. I’ve always loved the texture and pay-off that Hoola provides, but the lighter shade just works effortlessly with my skin tone to add a glow that works all year round; the perfectly matched tone just subtly adds warmth and radiance I love, so much so that I’ve been applying it daily since it arrived. The perfect introductory shade of bronzer, a great addition to your routine if you’re pale like me, or just a fab way to keep your glow all year round, Benefit Hoola Lite gets a definite thumbs up from me.
I can only assume that these new Hoola Caramel and Toasted shades offer the same radiance to darker skin tones too…
It’s been a long time coming, but it’s great to see Benefit start to diversify their shade offering – and what better way to start than with one of their best selling products.
