What used to be a fundamental but boring part of your essential daily care regime has speedily evolved into part of a beauty regime, thanks to our obsession with wide and bright smiles. I can probably count on my hands how many times I’ve written about toothbrushes and oral care over the last nine years, but that’s because it’s not exactly been the most exciting or revolutionary thing to discuss. For me, brushing my teeth was a necessary chore that I took no pleasure in; I never particularly looked at the different promises made by the brand names I was loyal to, choosing my toothbrush with honestly no more care and attention than deciding what to have for dinner. It wasn’t until I was introduced to Philips Sonicare that I started to pay marginally more attention to those first and last few minutes of my day, with their toothbrushes leading the way in my bathroom since 2014. (Side note, it’s a great toothbrush but they seem to last only about two years before breaking – I’ve gone through three in four years!) Brushing your teeth has never been particularity exciting, but ION-Sei is about to do things differently.
ION-Sei have harnessed the power of UV light and IONs to suppress plaque and bacteria for a healthier clean that makes a real difference in the long term. The ION-Sei toothbrush uses UV light within the head of the brush, that reacts with a Titanium Dioxide bar in the handle, to create ions that suppress bacteria; negative electrons are sent to your mouth via water and saliva, working with your body’s own natural electrical charge to inhibit growth. It sounds very technical (and honestly I can only just get my head around it – physics was not my strong point,) but all you need to know is that the brush head lights up as you use it and there’s no kind of sensation whatsoever, just the feeling of a great clean.
Unlike a lot of electric toothbrushes that can leave your mouth somewhat sore, this provides a really gentle cleanse while delivering up to 31,000 strokes per minute; from the very first use I noticed the difference (vs an Oral B for reference!) as my teeth were super smooth and fresh, without feeling like they’d been battered with a rotating head for two minutes. What I also love is how fresh my mouth continues to feel throughout the day, especially after eating sugary snacks – that horrid clammy feeling just isn’t there anymore, proving that the technology really does help to prevent the formation of plaque for hours after use too.
My husband has also been using an ION-Sei for the past couple of weeks, and he’s been impressed with the gentle sensation and super clean feeling as much as me; we both instantly noted how our mouths felt so much fresher, while the actual two minutes spent over the sink were far more enjoyable than they’ve previously been (if you can really enjoy brushing your teeth!) What I really like about this technology though, is that you don’t have to do anything differently or invest in any kind of ridiculous add on: once you’ve invested in the toothbrush, it just delivers all the added benefits without any extra attention. That’s something I can totally get on board with.
By the way, does anyone else look like a total tool while they brush their teeth?!
The ION-Sei Toothbrush is available from Amazon, priced £129.99.
