A decade ago Topshop really was the brand to beat; they nailed every new collection, collaborated with the hottest names in the business and their bi-annual catwalk show was the one everyone *actually* wanted to be at. When they launched their beauty collection (rather coincidentally the same year I launched my blog!) it was received with fanfare – undoubtedly thanks to the fact it did so during the dawn of social media, when ‘real people’ could share their ‘real opinions’, and the formulas themselves were really quite good. Back in the day there was rarely a product tried that I didn’t like, but the makeup arm of this iconic brand seemed to wane in focus and popularity a few years ago. At the time that really did baffle me (it was cool, affordable and most importantly effective,) but thankfully the downtime resulted in a re-launch that I’m VERY excited about… For Topshop Beauty is back, and these are some of the things you need to try.
The new collection is relatively extensive (covering off face, eyes, lips, nails and tools) and ranges from £6.00 to £16.00 – so nothing will break the bank. What’s even better about Topshop Beauty, is that it’s certified as cruelty free – so you can be safe in the knowledge that you look and feel great without harming any animals in the process. Although there are a load of on-trend lip and nail shades, applicator brushes and foundations to tickle your fancy, these are the pieces I’ve tried and think are more than worth their price.
Topshop Longwear Illuminating Primer (£14.00)
I’ve gotten out of the habit of using primers, but this subtly shimmering base is a real treat for the skin. It’s super soft to apply and leaves a velvety texture to the skin, with a radiant glow that can be worn alone or underneath your usual foundation; it’s not overpowering, meaning you could totally mix it in with your moisturiser or layer over the top of makeup for a little boost if you fancy. A little goes a long way, so this is a wise investment in your makeup bag for the next twelve months.
Topshop Longwear Eye Crayon (£10.00)
Eye crayons are massively underrated in my opinion; they’re super versatile, easy to use and perfect for travel, but many cost a small fortune. The Topshop version is well pigmented and super soft, easy to blend or buff just where you need it with your fingers – great for when you’re having one of those rushed mornings. Choose from an understated nude right up to a powerful metallic berry shade.
Topshop Glow Powder Highlighter (£15.00)
Highlighter for me is one of those products I just can’t do without, as no matter how knackered I’m feeling it helps to boost my skin and inject some much needed radiance. This baked powder is absolutely beautiful, adding an irridescent shimmer to the surface of skin which effortlessly reflects the light; the ‘Crescent Moon’ shade is something special too, adding golden pink tones to your complexion which help warm and flatter. One of my fave pieces from the whole range.
Topshop Ultra-Matte Lip Crayon (£10.00)
It was love at first swipe with this lip crayon, as the soft and highly pigmented formula glides beautifully over lips to leave a precise and elegant result. The tip aids application (rather than hindering it like most crayons) so this is perfect for getting that effortless red lip when you need it most, without weighing you down; it feels light and easy on the lips without drying the surface, meaning matte is more wearable than ever.
Topshop Glow Pot (£12.00)
A universal and multi-functional pot of golden shimmer, to start with I wasn’t too sure how to use this – but it’s a great product for adding shimmer, layering up or creating serious impact on the skin. Use a little on cheekbones as a highlighter, apply to lips as a metallic lipstick or to add a golden shimmer to your favourite share, buff into eyelids for a golden eyeshadow finish, or even use on your decolletage if you’re wanting to show off your assets. This little pot packs a big punch!
Topshop Shimmer Powder Blush (£10.00)
So many blusher shades are beautiful in the pan but just don’t work on the skin; it’s easy to over apply or create a look that’s too out of touch with your own colouring, but this blush offers a wearable range of colours and subtle shimmer that can be easily layered and won’t leave anyone feeling red faced. The perfect way to add a natural flush to skin, whether you’re into blush or it makes you nervous, and an incredible price point too.
Overall I’m super impressed with Topshop Beauty and I’m really glad it’s back. I’m expecting big things from it this year, and lots of innovative formulas to get my teeth stuck into. If anyone can leave us feeling excited about beauty again, it’s gonna be them…
