Let’s not beat around the bush: I have a lot of makeup. Probably more than is healthy, but it’s been an obsession of mine since such a young age that I can’t imagine life without a drawer full of options to choose from every morning. Mascara has always been top of that list, as I endlessly search for the holy grail that will help deliver a flutter of lashes that are long, luscious and full of volume; it’s the one product I’ll try pretty much every time, from every brand and budget imaginable, because you never know when you’re going to stumble across a great tube of the black stuff. From my experience, it really doesn’t make a difference how much you spend and if you buy from your favourite brand names: you’re just as likely to get a naff result as you are a great one! I try them all, so if you’re looking for a volumising and lengthening mascara that offers a great result even on the most stumpy of lashes, I’ve got five of the best I’ve tried to tick that box every time. Here are five of the mascaras I’ve been using on rotation for the last few months, and I love every single one completely…
No7 Lash Extender Mascara (£13.50)
One of those underrated brands that actually do some cracking pieces, No7’s mascaras are usually pretty effective at creating the result I want. This effortlessly coats lashes from root to tip, helping to add subtle volume and layering without flaking. It took me a good few uses to get the best out of this, but once I’d got used to the relatively thin brush it became a daily go-to for when you want to look awake but not overdone.
IT Cosmetics SuperHero Mascara (£19.00)
Don’t be put off by the overloaded brush – beneath is a mascara wand that will help create a beautiful and volumised set of lashes, if only you wipe it clean before you start! I love how this helps to coat every single lash, elongating them in only a couple of coats without any clumping or flaking. It’s perfect for when you want a little extra something from your look, especially if you’re creating a smoldering smokey eye; a bit pricey, but totally worth it to get the volumising and lengthening mascara of my dreams.
Avon True Ultra Volume Mascara (£8.50)
Currently on offer for a fiver, this mascara is a super affordable way to add subtle volume and length to your lashes. The chunky brush helps to capture all your lashes and gently lift them for a perfect daytime flutter, while the formula only seems to get better the more you use it. Although this wasn’t as much as an instant love as much as the others, it’s a great staple if you’re looking for a lower budget alternative.
NARS Climax Mascara (£21.00)
This was so overhyped and endorsed by pretty much ever influencer on the internet when it launched, so to say I was skeptical is probably a huge understatement. But when I finally ordered it to give it a whirl myself, it was pretty much love at first swipe – this really does deliver a powerful and voluminous flutter, effortlessly creating extra length and lift without flaking or dropping throughout the day. A great one if you like your lashes bold, or all you need to feel fabulous is a coat of mascara and a touch of lipgloss.
Maybelline The Colossal Big Shot Mascara (£7.99)
A long term love of mine (I wrote about it for the first time back in 2017) this still keeps on delivering – so much so that I’ve always got at least one tube in my stash. The chunky brush picks up lots of product but deposits it on lashes without any clumping, even when applying upwards of five layers; I love the result it delivers, giving me a ‘false lash look’ without the need to faff about with lash glue.
All five of these would be in my mascara hall of fame, but which volumising and lengthening mascara would you choose?
