How To Wear A Midi Skirt

One of my fave things to wear, no matter the occasion or season, is without a doubt a great midi skirt. The classic style and shape provides an effortless way to feel polished and ‘pulled together’ without having to really think through your whole look. I’ve got so many in my closet, with the pleated and slightly A-Line shape being my preference, as they see me through the whole year with ease; to take you from one season to the next all you have to do is change up the way you style it and you’ve got a whole new look without having to spend a penny! Whenever I post midi skirts on my Instagram account they receive so much love, but many of you have asked for advice on how to style them and the best way to integrate them into your wardrobe… So I’ve pulled together my top tips on how to wear a midi skirt and why everyone needs at least one in their wardrobe.

1. Pattern Vs Plain
I personally like to either embrace a patterned skirt and pair it with a plain top, or pair a patterned top with a plain skirt; basically it has to be one or the other! If you let the midi skirt do all the talking then the overall result is even more effortless, but if you want to invest in a simple midi (you can’t go wrong with black, nude or grey) then it’s far easier to make it work harder for you by matching it with different shapes, styles and patterns on top. I have a load of patterned jumpers for this purpose!

2. Tuck It In
The first time I did this my husband tried to ‘tidy me up’ because he thought I’d done it on purpose, but tucking in the front section of your top or jumper can help to create an elegant silhouette. Especially during the colder months when you’ll want to pair your midi with some opaque tights and a jumper, tucking in a baggier top will help to keep the overall result relaxed but flattering; if you leave your jumper hanging over the waistband it’ll cut off your waist and make you look frumpy.

3. What’s On Top?
What I love most about a midi is that you can dress it up or down: during the winter it looks perfect with a jumper (cropped or otherwise,) and during the summer months all you need is a crisp tee. During the evening a shirt with rolled up sleeves, a silky cami or a blouse looks fabulous paired with some heels and a clutch. A midi skirt is one of the most versatile pieces you can wear!

4. Keep It Casual
Talking of which, for the daytime there’s nothing that looks chicer than wearing your midi with a pair of sneakers. You may be forgiven for thinking a skirt means you have to dress up or take the smarter route, put keeping it casual breathes whole new life into the look; one of my fave things to wear right now is a skirt or dress with my plain white Adidas trainers, and it makes me feel all cool and edgy too (lolz.)

5. Bikers Are Best
The issue of a cover-up can be a big one, but from my experience the best jacket to wear with a midi is a biker – leather or otherwise. The cropped style nips you in at your waist and flatters every style, shape and age, while the texture and detail keep an otherwised polished look feeling edgier and more useful. Even in winter a biker jacket is a great addition, just pop on a chunky scarf to keep you warm!

6. Accessorize Well
As a final touch, adding a belt to further accentuate your waist or add a touch of detail is always a great idea. Most midi skirts have chunky waistbands, so a belt effortlessly slips over the top to accessorize without overdoing it – keeping the rest of your look simple, tonal and on-trend. I love a shoulder bag or hand-held tote with a midi too, rather than a chunky bag or cross-body; it ensures all focus is on your fancy skirt and your waist.

Are you a fan of a midi skirt? How do you like to style yours?

I’m not. But thanks for making a girl feel great about a full-from-cake tummy and satin…
