The influence of the East in our beauty regimes has been increasingly prevalent in the last few years. What started as a dash of BB Cream and a sprinkling of sheet masks has evolved into an industry-wide phenomenon that’s constantly evolving into something new; every other beauty launch takes inspiration from a trend seen half way around the world, with innovations like cushion foundations becoming as mainstream as mascara in a really short space of time. However, what’s most interesting to me is actually looking to the products that are actually coming out of this space without any ‘westernisation’ or watering down of their message, benefit or (most importantly) kitsch presentation. There are few places you can actually get your hands on these raw treats, but BeautyMART are becoming well established as the destination for something a little different; they manage to import some of the best and most exciting bits and pieces for our enjoyment, keeping prices affordable but allowing us to dabble in some real Eastern treasures. Right now there’s a whole new load of things landing to get excited about, and I’ve picked the five I think are most interesting and could be adopted by our high street in the months and years to come…
1. THE PEELABLE LIP STAIN: Romantic Bear Long Lasting Lip Color (£8.50)
With so many new lip launches landing on my desk, it’s hard to get excited about yet another lipgloss. However, this is totally unique and really rather revolutionary – even if a pain to apply. This long lasting lip colour applies as a thick gloss, offering a rich and shiny colour result on the lips, but once dried it can be peeled off to reveal a stain underneath. Genius! Although the applicator nozzle is a bit of a nightmare (I’d recommend applying this with a lip brush to get a precise and wearable finish, otherwise you may get in a mess,) I love the idea of a product that works in multiple ways to leave you with a delicate stain beneath the surface. You can either apply the colour and leave it for a rich result, or wait until it’s dry to peel off the surface and enjoy the tint beneath; whether you want to transform your look in the middle of the day or just inject a little fun into your makeup regime, the choice is yours.
2. THE BROW STYLING TINT: Etude House Tint My Brows Gel (£12.50)
Continuing the idea of a hidden stain beneath a practical makeup tool, this fabulous little product could be a game changer. The precise applicator helps to add a rich tone to brows, filling them out and creating a full brow look, but also works to stain the surface of skin for up to two days. That means your brows won’t budge, but also if you apply it for a few days in succession you’ll end up with a subtle dye job that means you don’t need to worry about applying a top-up over the surface. Great for holidays or those of you that prefer an understated makeup look, I can see this idea totally catching on and an array of products launching with a similar offering in 2017 and beyond.
3. THE BRIGHTENING SHEET: BioAqua Egg Face Mask (£4.00)
We’ve long been told the Old Wives Tale that egg whites can help brighten skin, tighten pores and reduce oil production, so it was only a matter of time before someone translated that literally into a skincare treat. This sheet mask is enriched with egg protein to intensely hydrate, brighten and control oil production in less than ten minutes – and it works. Thankfully it doesn’t smell of old omelettes, but instead provides an enjoyable and relaxing way to start your day while helping to boost the look and feel of your complexion. Although the results aren’t long-lasting, this is great to use before a big day or night out to help infuse moisture and tighten everything up a little – plus the egg shaped pack is a bonus.
4. THE SWEET SCENTED HAND TREAT: Tony Moly Magic Food Banana Hand Milk (£7.00)
I’m a banana addict and have been for many years. I’ll eat them until they come out of my ears, while the sweet scent of banana bread puts a smile on my face and a rumble in my tummy. When I first saw this kitsch banana-shaped bottle of hand cream I couldn’t help but coo; it’s so cute, but also somewhat practical as it’s a lot harder to squeeze out the juice from this when floating around in a handbag than my usual flimsy tubes. The cream itself is delicately scented with a sweet banana fragrance, while it quickly soothes away dry skin without overloading or feeling greasy. It may not be the best hand cream in the world, but the cuteness factor totally overcomes that and makes the price point more than justifiable. Here’s hoping Crabtree & Evelyn will launch a whole range of gardening shaped hand creams in the next year or two!
5. THE 3-STEP FACE MASK: Pig-Nose Clear Black Head 3-Step Kit (£4.50)
Sheet masks are nothing new, but the big trend coming in from Asia is the three-step face mask which treats the experience like a whole skincare regime. This three-step mask contains targeted ingredients to make the most of every stage of the treatment, including sage, mistletoe and peppermint to soften sebum plugs, kaolin clay and lemon extract to draw out blackheads and anise lime grape and aloe to soothe skin. Rather than just wacking on a mask or multi-masking your way through, this targeted treatment helps to really tackle a problem from beginning to end. Although it’s not necessarily a pampering product (definitely more functional,) it’s interesting to see masks evolve in this way and capitalise on our tendency to use them as a once-a-week problem solver.
Are you excited for any of these new trends to hit the UK market? Which brands can you see adopting them in the next year or two?
