The multi Grammy award winning artist may have been away from the spotlight for a time to recover from throat surgery, but this September he’s back with a bang – in more ways than one. If you’re not usually a fan of ‘celebrity scents’ then please do park your preconceptions at the door and let me explain why this is different… Unlike the majority of fragrances which involve little more than the celebrity in question choosing where to stamp their name on the bottle, this has been a truly collaborative process from beginning to end. Lead perfumer Karine Dubreuil-Sereni explains: “We worked together with Michael to create something truly special he’d be happy
to have his name on, and more importantly, create a fragrance so
beautiful that it encapsulated the way he would love a woman to smell.
Michael is very natural, charismatic and charming to work with. He was
inspired and engaged in the process from day one and it has been an
absolute pleasure working with him on his debut fragrance; this
collaboration has very much been an artist inspired journey working
closely with Michael and his team every step of the way.”
Furthermore, this new fragrance has been created as a premium addition to the market that will stand the test of time (and even create a new ‘high end’ celebrity endorsed or created fragrance category.) The Bulgarian essence of Rose at the heart of ’By Invitation’ fragrance costs €150,000 per kg, illustrating that no cost has been spared to create the perfect scent; furthermore, the fragrance is concentrated at 18% to ensure it’s rich and long-lasting – much higher than the majority of Eau De Perfums which can sit anywhere above the 10% concentration level. As soon as you breathe in the notes of the fragrance you can tell this is different; it’s light and fresh, classic and timeless, without being too sweet or too floral. Michael told me of his love for artisan fragrances (he personally wears Diptyque, which gives you an indication of his own tastes,) so this is an incarnation of that passion and understanding of what makes an irresistible scent.

What I loved finding out from Michael himself during my time with him (yes, I did get to interview The Bublé – more on that soon!) was how brutally honest and cutthroat he was throughout the process. He admitted he didn’t want the scent to smell like a 13 year old or an ‘old lady’, taking samples home to get the feedback of all the women in his life before it got the final sign-off; he even helped to design the bottle himself to ensure it was something his wife would proudly display on her dresser, after he scrapped the original prototype at the last minute. This is a scent he’s worked tirelessly on to ensure it’s a collaboration he’s proud of. During our time together, he was genuinely anxious about whether or not we liked the scent and what the feedback would be at the global launch that evening; I was happy to report back that every one of us that smelt it instantly became a little bit addicted – and I’ve been wearing it every day since.
I love everything about ‘By Invitation’; the concept, the design, the scent and the man behind it.
