Nothing quite says ‘big night out’ at Christmas more than a powerful red lip. Although I personally love to rock a scarlet pout as much on a Tuesday afternoon as a Friday night, for the majority red lipstick is reserved for special occasions or serious partying. If the thought of a bold bullet makes your knees quiver, then you may be pleased to know there are now a huge range of wearable lipsticks that are built around two key issues – comfort and longevity. Only a few years ago you could be left with dry, patchy and uncomfortable lips (with more coverage on your wine glass or coffee cup than your pout) if you opted for a lipstick, but now the options are vast – and more affordable than ever. As a hoarder of red tones, here are five of my personal favourites that offer up a really wearable texture; each one provides serious pigment, comfort and a long-lasting finish.

1. Bobbi Brown Art Stick – Harlow Red (£20.00)
This lipstick-meets-liner creates an incredibly long-lasting result that can be finished with a slick of gloss or balm, or left to create impact all on its own. It offers precision without a huge amount of transference, plus it lasts for so long it’s unreal; due to its pencil nature, you have to sharpen it to get more product – meaning there’s no wastage! The pencil glides on effortlessly to leave a creamy-matte finish that’s not at all drying; what I really like is that you can apply a lip balm over the top for comfort, without losing the impact of the colour beneath. Once you’ve tried Bobbi Brown’s Art Sticks, you’ll be somewhat addicted to this simple innovation.

2. Clinique Pop Lip & Colour – Cherry Pop (£16.00)
One of my favourite launches of the last twelve months, these little bullets are enriched with nourishing ingredients to simultaneously look after your lips while adding colour. The inclusion of a ‘primer’ also helps this to stick around for blooming ages, meaning that even when you do need to re-apply your lips aren’t completely parched. This is one of very few red lipsticks I’ll happily apply in the morning and still be re-applying by bedtime; a wise investment if you want to start your new year in a red lip state of mind!

3. L’Oreal Color Riche Lipstick – Blake’s Red (£6.99)
An incredible lipstick for the price point, this is the most perfect vintage inspired red – pretty much regardless of skintone; I wore this out to a recent dinner and ended up applying it on a couple of other friends, proving how versatile and universal it is. The formula is enriched with ‘velvet spheres’ (L’Oreal talk for ‘stuff that feels smooth’) and jojoba oils, so lips feel hydrated and totally comfortable after applying. It lasts a pretty long time, although it does transfer quite easily, making it a great one to pop in your clutch bag this party season.

4. Delilah Colour Intense Cream Lipstick- Vintage (£24.00)
If you’re after a lipstick that looks as good as it feels, then Delilah is just up your street. One of the most beautiful brands on the high street right now, everything about this feels extravagant; the soft-touch metal, the embossed bullet, the super smooth and hydrating finish… Stunning. Vitamin E helps to protect lips against anti-oxidents too, ensuring your lips look fabulous now and over time. Although this is a big investment, the colour is gorgeous and the result is one that you’ll want to show off. This is a New Years Eve lippie if ever there was one.

5. Smashbox Be Legendary Lip Lacquer – Fire Cracker (£19.00)
An alternative texture for those wanting to either layer their colour or switch up a traditional lipstick for something altogether more glossy, Smashbox’s lip lacquers definitely pack a punch. Although their glossy nature means this doesn’t last that long and it does totally transfer onto your glass, the result is powerful and totally lustworthy. This isn’t a product you’d want to reach to on a daily basis, but it is fabulous when layered over the Bobbi Brown Art Stick (above,) or when combined with another lipstick; it’s like an additional layer of pigment that keeps your lips powerful for longer.

I bought the L'oreal one for a christmas party and I love it! I'm a MASSIVE Mac fan, but this seriously rivals the staying power of them! πŸ™‚ x

You NEED to try the Clinique ones if you haven't – they're amazing. I actually bought Glamour when they were giving away mini versions just for the smaller size!
