Love it or loathe it, you can’t look sideways without stumbling into some Star Wars memorabilia right now. If you’ve been living under a rock then you may not know they’re rekindling the franchise this winter, with the long-awaited sequel finally being released to the applause of geeks across the land. Having never sat through the full films until a few months ago (actively encouraged by the boyfriend before we went to Star Wars Secret Cinema,) the majority of the hype passes me by… But after spending the last couple of weeks in the USA, it’s hard to ignore the hysteria this hyper-brand creates within men and women of all ages. If you could put a Star Wars logo on it and create some vague link with the forthcoming film, it was there ready to be purchased! And that includes makeup. I published a sneak peek on Instagram a little while ago of some images created by Pat McGrath to celebrate the partnership of Max Factor and the Star Wars franchise, but it seems in America they’re also being used within a capsule CoverGirl collection too. (For those wondering, in the States they’re two separate brands – but in the UK they seem to merge quite a lot into one, being owned by the same parent company.) I managed to pick up a couple of bits while I was out there to give you a preview of what to expect when the collection hits our shores later this year.
The collection includes mascara, nail polish and lipstick in very wearable shades – including this red metallic bullet and nude varnish. However, there are also lots of additional shades that would be more suitable for Halloween party than a Friday night down the pub; gold, silver and lilac lipsticks aren’t your usual tones, but they can be used over more traditional stains to enhance lips or make a colour pop. The nail polishes are actually pretty boring (including a red, nude and deep purple shade) albeit a great texture; I really expected this to be the area that they could push the boundaries and create some interesting textures, tones and finishes – so it’s somewhat disappointing to see the same old stuff that could be part of any autumn collection.
Interestingly, the focus of the collaboration is very much the mascaras that have Star Wars quotes embossed onto the pack. Available in ten different variants, the mascara itself helps to lengthen and separate lashes relatively effortlessly; I personally prefer a fuller brush to really work every individual lash and create volume, but this is a great every day product that’s a best seller in the USA. However, the ten limited edition mascaras aren’t actually any different inside – it’s just a very clever way of selling more stuff to the fans that love a bit of Darth Vader! Oh those marketing types…
I was expecting the overall look and feel of ‘Star Wars for CoverGirl’ to be a little more ‘out there’ and space age appropriate, but it’s actually quite wearable and definitely something that the majority of beauty lovers will appreciate – regardless of their affinity with the movie franchise. With such a huge fan base, this is a really rather genius way of reaching a demographic that’s previously been untouched by the power of a lightsaber. Who says you have to be a middle aged man or eleven year old boy to appreciate a bit of Sci-Fi? My collection of Doctor Who and Back To The Future memorabilia proves that these shows and movies span not only generations, but sexes and interests too. Overall, although it’s actually quite a tame incarnation of a rather OTT concept, the products will actually appeal to the majority of women… And maybe even a few men.
