The Product That Saved My Nails (Twice): Mavala Scientifique Nail Hardener

Brittle, flaking, chipped and thin nails are a problem of a generation. Excessive typing on our laptops, constant swiping on our smartphones, drying washing-up liquids and the harsh temperatures can play havoc with the moisture levels in our hands – which in turn causes our nails to look a little worse for wear. Although there are lots of little things you can do to grow your nails effectively (read my top tips here,) sometimes you need a serious helping hand to get your talons into shape. I’ve tried so many treatments, base coats and strengthening formulas that my collection is bursting at the seams; but this little blue bottle from Mavala has become the unexpected hero of them all, turning my flaky and dry nails into almost perfect specimens. Twice.

Applied as a base coat up to three times a week, the Mavala Scientifique Nail Hardener turns soft, flaking or splitting nails into healthy and strong ones. Its strengthening formula hardens the nail plate so that the nail can restore its normal growth, instantly penetrating to get to work where it’s needed most. It dries within seconds, meaning there’s no faffing or waving your hands in the air, plus it’s practically undetectable on the nail – it won’t interfere with polish if you wish to apply it straight over. Not only does it help nails to look healthier without polish, but it gives me the confidence to go polish free; flaking nails are somewhat unsightly, meaning I used to cover them in a strong shade to hide my embarrassment.

Originally I had this little bottle on my desk and would use it a couple of times a week when I remembered. After a few weeks I noticed that my nails were much stronger, much more healthy looking, weren’t flaking or breaking, and in fact needed trimming because they were getting so long. (Something that happens once in a blue moon.) This simple formula was the only thing I was doing differently, partnered with regular use of cuticle oil, so it was obvious Mavala was the reason behind my practically instantaneous nail health. A month or so later I’d slacked off with regular applications and my nails started to flake and chip again; integrating it back into my routine has saved my nails once again, leaving them looking and feeling healthier than they have in a long time. If I had to swap all of my nail polishes for one life-long alternative, then this would be it. I’m addicted, and with good reason. This genuinely works; a life long friendship has been formed!

Do you suffer with flaky, weak or broken nails? Do you have any top tips for strengthening them?

A Nail Hardener works great for soft damaged nails, especially if it contains protein (keratin) and it can also promote nail growth thanks to nail conditioning ingredients. However, for flaking nails I prefer "Cuti-Lips" by Leighton Denny, it does wonders! :)Makeup Tips Everyone Should Know //

I was really looking forward to using this but only realised when I got it home that it has formaldehyde in which I'm allergic to! (Mavala polishes don't have formaldehyde in so I didn't even look…) So if anyone wants an un-opened bottle sent to them for free… I love that Revlon polish though, it's one of my favourites!

It mean that I really need this product. After I had my gel nail applied my nails are so damaged and whatever I do I can't fix it (even with the nail conditioner that worked last time when I had gel nails). It's a month since I take them off and I've tried so many products with no effects. The last hope in this product!
