The last couple of years have seen an explosion of interest in healthy eating, exercise, mindfulness and understanding that wellness starts from within. You can apply all the creams, lotions, potions and makeup products you want, but if you’re not looking after yourself from the inside out then the results will only have their limitations. I’m a firm believer in supplements, superfoods and smoothies – especially having seen the impact of high potency fish oil tablets on my boyfriend’s eczema over the period of a few months. Gold Collagen are continuing that journey with their pioneering liquid beauty supplement, which comes with a host of skin-boosting benefits to leave consumers looking and feeling their best. The Gold Collagen supplements have been specifically developed to nourish skin from the inside and out, targeting the visible signs of ageing linked with collagen loss; they aim to create smoother, plumper, more youthful looking skin with just one tasty shot a day. I roped in the help of my best friend to put the little vials to the test over a month long period, to see if they could make a difference to her… And these are the results.

So first things first, what actually are these supplements and how do they work? The secret behind Gold Collagen is a unique mixture of the hydrating properties of hyaluronic acid (a substance that is naturally present in the human body that helps repair damage or ageing) combined with the highest quality collagen; this then offers support in skin cell regeneration and hydration, resulting
in “increased smoothness, softening the appearance of fine lines and
decreasing the appearance of wrinkles in as little as six weeks.” Taking inspiration from leading technology in Japan, Gold Collagen
nourishes skin from the inside out, targeting the visible signs of
ageing associated with collagen loss.

So what’s collagen? Collagen plays a key role
in providing ‘scaffolding’ for cells, tissues, and organs but it also
gives skin strength and durability; it’s responsible for the smooth,
plump appearance of young, healthy skin. As we age the production of
collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin gradually decreases
(at a rate of around 1.5% a year) which in tern causes dehydration and dullness which only adds to the signs of ageing. The daily shots taste great as they are naturally sweetened with Stevia and help to create a better skin tone with the highest skin hydration levels. According to Pure Gold Collagen, one shot of their supplement is up to twenty times more effective than using a collagen skin cream or collagen pill, particularly as it’s absorbed directly into your blood stream – rather than applied as a topical treatment.

Tony Sanguinetti (Founder and Managing Director of Minerva, the producers of Pure Gold Collagen,) says: “Gold Collagen is distributed to the dermis via the blood stream (the deeper layer of the skin) and results in the stimulation of fibroblast cells (collagen-making cells in the connective tissue of the skin) to produce more collagen and hyaluronic acid. Whilst some creams claim to be able to reach the dermis, Gold Collagen actually targets the fibroblast cells in the dermis, triggering them to make more collagen. The outer layer of the skin is extremely difficult to penetrate and as a result the chance of active ingredients reaching the dermis of the skin through topical application is very limited.” I know it’s complicated, but stay with me…

So where is the evidence that this actually works? I’m always a skeptic when it comes to believing anything that tells me it’s going to provide a miracle answer, but Minerva Research Labs (the owners of Pure Gold Collagen) have undertaken in-house clinical trials, scientific research projects in Europe (Universities of Portsmouth, Liverpool, Reggio Emilia and Roma) whilst also collaborating with dermatologists and Aesthetic medicine specialists all around the world. A clinical study* carried out revealed that uses benefited from a 12% increase in skin hydration after three weeks, a 15% reduction in fine lines and 27% reduction in wrinkle depth after six weeks, plus a 20% increase in skin elasticity after nine weeks. They’re results that I can believe in.

So how did my friend Gemma get on when she tried the Pure Gold Collagen supplements over a month long period? First things first, she absolutely loved the taste; getting texts saying “these are so yummy I can’t wait for tomorrow morning” definitely prove that the combination of peach and passionfruit is a winning formula. After the first couple weeks she didn’t see much, if any, difference in the tone or texture of her skin (saying “my skin has had a bit of a bad time for a few weeks, but it’s calming down now so I’m looking forward to seeing what this can do”) but she kept with it. After a couple more weeks she started to see the benefit on more than just her skin: “My hair has started to fall out less, my nails are stronger and there’s less redness on my face.” Sometimes it’s harder to see a difference yourself when you look in the mirror every day, but I’ve definitely noticed her skin seems to be much more radiant and a little smoother. She has a very distinct ‘glow’ about her that wasn’t there before, which has lead to a lot more selfies on Facebook than normal!

Gemma does suffer from breakouts, redness, pigmentation, dryness and the first signs of ageing – which together have an impact on the texture and tone of her skin. She’s not one to indulge in too many products and keeps her routine simple, providing me with the perfect guinea pig to try this routine out over a thirty day period. Although Gold Collagen hasn’t made a huge difference over the course of a month, she says: “I’m sure with prolonged used I’d see a real difference, but right now I’ve still got those annoying wrinkles at the corners of my eyes!” I think the key thing is that these supplements are a really easy way to integrate goodness into your routine on a daily basis, knowing you’re getting that hit of hyaluronic acid and collagen. The clinical studies* talk for themselves, proving that the ingestion of these traditional topical ingredients provides a positive impact on the texture and appearance of skin. And as far as Gemma’s concerned? “I like that I’m treating my skin every day – plus they’re so yummy I can’t say no!”

What do you think of skincare shots? Would you be tempted to try Pure Gold Collagen and integrate it into your daily skincare regime?

These are very popular in Asia.. After trying the Hyaluronic acid molecules from Deciem and the texture really just freaked me out, I cannot bring myself to try any more beauty drinks >.<

These aren't anywhere near as 'jelly like' as the Deciem one – I struggled with that too. These are just like a thick juice.

These do sound so lovely. I have similar skin to your friend who tried them so I'd love to see how beneficial they are first hand. Thanks for sharing.

This is so interesting, what a cool new product. I think everyone is looking for that quick fix, when the truth is that real change always takes time especially if you want it to last. I would love a post about continued use, maybe after three months? Great post and photos!Kiran

Yeah it's definitely a long-term lifestyle choice I think! No quick fixes really exist.

I am also SUPER sceptic about these things too! I remember when these drinks first came out, I watched the advert and said to my BF they aren't actually promising you anything other than showing a pretty lady on the TV. I do believe that eating right for skin is hugely important, there are only 2 essential fatty acids the body cannot make themselves (they are the building blocks of things that make collagen etc.) – linoleic acid and linolenic acid, (also a cousin, is gamma-linolenic acid), these are all SUPER important for healthy skin, and a lot of diets are deficient. Flax seed, grapeseed oil, borage oil, evening primrose oil are all great ways to get this in your diet and get great skin too… they are a little cheaper aswell ;)
