Unecessary or Pure Genius? Butter London Nail Foundation

As soon as I’m tired, haven’t been eating properly or spend too much time out in the cold, my nails are the first thing to suffer. I buff them, file them and condition them, but still they continue to flake and break. Not only does it cause them to look unsightly, but it impacts the way in which nail polish sits over the top and reduces the longevity of a manicure by about half – if your nails aren’t smooth enough to hold on to the polish effectively, it’s going to chip all over the place. Butter London have this genius little product that I picked up in Boots, providing the benefit of a flawless base in nail form; they call it ‘Nail Foundation‘ and claim it provides a flawless basecoat, that works like ‘makeup for your nails’. But it this a genius innovation, or just marketing fodder developed to make us part with even more cash in the search for the perfect mani?

This silk-finish, stain resistant, non-toxic base coat nail lacquer provides a great foundation for nail polish while simultaneously smoothing ridges and imperfections on the nail. It’s lightweight, dries incredibly fast and leaves a matte result that’s incredibly subtle but does make a big difference – almost like those photoshopped nails you see in magazine adverts. You can wear it alone if you want a natural result (Butter London even recommend it for men!) but it provides a great basecoat on which to apply your chosen polish. My nails look and feel a lot smoother and there’s not as much chipping with this as there is without, making it something I’ve come to use a lot.

The formula ios free from formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, phthalates and parabens (if you’re concerned about that kind of thing,) while the bottle is big enough to last an age. Although this doesn’t wave a magic wand over my didgts, it does give me a little more confidence to go polish free or the fact my colour will last more than a day. There are loads of other similar products, but I haven’t tried one that provides the same smooth matte finish as this; although it’s quite pricey at £15.00, if you’re self-conscious about your nails then this may give them an understated boost that’s worth the price tag.
The Butter London Nail Foundation is available online and in Boots stores priced £15.00

Because my nails are ugly naked, it might be worth trying for me, but I need photos/swatches to decide.

You can't really swatch an invisible matte base coat unfortunately!

I love the sound of this! I haven't tried any nail foundations but i'm looking to give my nails a break from gels. I'm tempted to try this.Antonia x | Fifi and the Diamonds

Love the sound of this. I would wear this alone as well, just so that my nails at least look a little bit more presentable. Zoe Newlove Beauty Blogger & MUA

This looks intriguing, it'd have to extend wear time by quite a lot for me to be bothered though :DABlogByPhilippa

I’m not sold on these foundation, bb, cc nail varnishes. Tbh I’m a colour girl at heart and would much rather spend £15 on a decent red polish! http://www.britishbeautyaddict.com

This sounds interesting and would probably be great for me as my nails are not the best but I'm not too sure if I really believe in this hype :/ Jessie | Taylor Mayed

Sadly I found that this and the butter top coat make my nail polish 'ping' off-I tried it with all different polishes that don't do it with any other top and base coats and they all did it-like I would literally catch sight of my hand and it wasn't chipped but the nail polish from a whole nail had just peeled off! Will definitely give this a go as I find whenever I try growing out my nails they get all brittle and break easy. I like how it can be worn under a nail polish because that means I can still put some prettier colours over. Lovely post! Holly x http://thechroniclesofholly.blogspot.com/

I'd love to see how this looks on your nails – it sounds like a product I could do with buying as sometimes I'd love to not have to wear nail polish, but the natural flaky nail look isn't a good one! I might just try this. Thanks for posting about it as I'd never heard of it before!Amywww.getglam.co.uk
