Crabtree & Evelyn are a brand steeped in history, offering a huge array of kitsch and vintage looking beauty products that will whet any appetite. This February they’ve launched a super cute and affordable ‘his and her’ fragrance duo that make giving perfume that bit more special. Both of these bottles are inspired by days past, bringing a touch of elegance and sophistication to any dressing table or bathroom cabinet – another bottle of Hugo Boss these are not. If you’re after a beautiful and thoughtful gift for a loved one, then these should definitely be top of your list.
The male incarnation, Black Absinthe, is inspired by the pick-me-up
drink of Paris’ heyday and contains fresh, green, rejuvenating notes
that celebrate absinthe’s apothecary roots. Crabtree & Evelyn say: “Underneath the aroma of
these lively wild herbs, a vintage heart note of French lavender blended
with smooth black liquorice and peppery vetiver calls to mind an
intimate Parisian bar, while a creamy tonka base note adds a deep,
sensual tone.” It’s musty, sexy, invigorating and totally different to any mainstream fragrance I’ve smelt in recent times; although it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, it’s definitely a scent for a ‘man’s man’ that likes to wear his fragrance – rather than allowing it to wear him.
The female imagining is titled Parisian Millefleurs (loosely translated as Flower Water) and is inspired by the
opulent floral style of scent prevalent in 18th century France,
remaining true to the original idea of creating a perfumed blend from a
diverse collection of wild and exquisite blooms. The aroma of
freshly-cut leaves, notes of narcissus, rose, tuberose and violet
flourish in vibrant harmony to provide a heady bouquet that sparkles
with greenery. I didn’t think I’d like this (it’s very floral and definitely for the more sophisticated nose,) but it’s surprisingly wearable and worth a purchase for the extravagant bottle alone. I adore the classic pump spray mechanism, it having taken pride of place on my perfume shelf even though I know I’ll rarely reach for it.
Considering the beautifully designed packaging, the sophisticated aroma and the vintage appeal of each of the bottles, you’ll be surprised to know these are only £45.00 each for 100ml of fragrance. They’re a great by and the bottles can even be reused or displayed as vintage accessories once the scent has been applied, making them great little buys for Valentines – or any other day of the year.
