There’s no doubt about it, I’m addicted to lip balms. The one part of my beauty collection that’s bursting at the seams, and has no chance of dying down any time soon, is my beloved lip treatment repertoire that’s more expansive than Boots. I’m never without at least a couple of little tubes in my bag, prepared for any dry-lipped moment that may take me by surprise, sometimes even emptying out the double-digits after a couple of busy days on-the-go. Although I’m loyal to a few products and brands that I can’t live without, I’m always fascinated when new exciting things land on my desk to try. With the cold winds brewing and the spring sunshine seeming more distant than ever, our lips are suffering and are in need of an old fashioned pamper; here are five fab lip balms that have made their way into my handbag of late – and for very good reason.
1. Hurraw! Green Tea Lip Balm (£3.99)
It may be the January blues that make me more intrigued by anything green, but this lip balm contains matcha green tea powder to deliver antioxidant benefits while cold-pressed hemp oil ensures it’s exceptionally high in omega fatty acids. Made from certified organic, vegan ingredients (with no beeswax) this offers lips a delicate and lightweight texture that really soothes over a period of time. The scent is extremely delicate, while the transparent balm leaves the lightest film on lips with just a touch of shine. Available in a multitude of flavours and scents (including cherry, almond, chocolate and grapefruit) this is definitely one of my new fave lip brands.
2. Lanolips Lemonaid Lip Aid (£9.18)
No round-up of lip balms would be complete without the inclusion of something Lanolips; Lemonaid is made with organic lemon oil to provide a sweet and uplifting scent that reminds me of freshly brewed still lemonade at the height of summer. This ultra rich and creamy whipped lanolin lip treatment leaves lips feeling fresh, soft and moist, while the inclusion of lemon oil works as a natural exfoliator to remove dry flakes and dull skin. I’d happily apply this repeatedly for the scent alone, but knowing it’s also doing good makes it a staple within my collection.
3. LipGlam Lip Balm (£9.99)
A new one on the scene, LipGlam is a natural lip balm that uses the power of lanolin to replenish and revitalise skin. It instantly soothes and hydrates lips to leave them feeling plump, replenishing natural radiance and helping to restore skin’s natural protective barrier. Yes this is essentially another incarnation of Lanolips, but this is in a slightly bigger tube and can be used on other areas of the body too – including cuticles, elbows and dry patches. It claims to offer up to eight hours hydration, which I can honestly say it doesn’t, but it’s a great handbag saviour that works equally well on naked lips as it does over a stain or lipstick. Watch out for this one hitting stores soon!
4. L’Occitane Ultra Rich Lip Balm (£8.50)
Well known for their nourishing creams and cult shea butter ingredient, this lip balm combines the benefit of both for a lightweight and hardworking balm. The rounded application tip helps to manoevre the balm across the lips without the need for fingers, while reducing the amount required to coat the lips in a soothing film. Although this isn’t the most nourishing, it’s a great top-up and works well over lipsticks that you’ve applied a few hours earlier and have started to dry out lips.
5. Melvita Moisturizing Lip Balm (£8.00)
With a soft and non-greasy texture, this new lip balm instantly helps to soothe dry lips while providing long-lasting comfort. The formula contains shea butter and canuba wax, while being 100% organic – great if you’re concerned about what you’re putting on your lips. The handy lipstick-shaped bullet also ensures precision and minimises mess, offering a lightweight texture that’s a lot softer than you would anticipate from the pack. Also available in a citrus variant, this is a handy little tool for applying on the go and so much better than a Chapstick.
