LBQ’s Blogvent Calendar DAY EIGHT: Want To Win Me As Your Mentor?

One of the best things about being a ‘successful’ blogger is being able to share your knowledge and experience with others. I’ve been doing this old blogging thing for nearly five years and I really wish I had someone to hold my hand in the early stages; blogging was new and uncharted territory, so it was each to their own and ‘wing it as best as possible.’ Over the years I’ve managed to carve a niche, build incredible relationships with brands, PRs and bloggers a like, work on some amazing campaigns and even turn a part-time hobby into a full-time job. Although it’s much harder in 2014 to carve your own niche, it’s not impossible – hundreds of blogs are launched every single day, all with a unique perspective and story to tell. I’ve written numerous posts sharing my stories, top tips and things I’ve learned along the way, mainly as a way to answer all those emails and questions that I can’t respond to personally with the depth I’d like. However, in 2015 it would be nice to actually help someone on a personal and one-to-one level, hopefully helping them on their way to making their dreams come true.

Although it may seem a little odd, I thought it may be of interest to a handful of people to have me as a mentor in January – giving the ‘winner’ an opportunity to ask all those burning questions, have me look over their site, provide advice on growing an audience and working with brands, plus lots more. The prize will include two one-to-one sessions in a central London location within January (dates of your choice that match my diary!) and include an endless supply of tea and cake to fuel us. What you get out of it is up to you – whether you want advice on launching a blog from scratch, want to take your site to the next level, know what you need to do to turn your hobby into a career or simply want someone to bounce ideas off. I’m all ears, ready and waiting… If you want to win this unique opportunity, then simply leave me a comment below with your blog address (if you have one) and why you’d love to have me as your mentor.

Although this isn’t really a competition as such, I’ll pick someone at random by 15th December. You must be available to get to London (or alternatively we can host sessions over Skype) and cover your own transportation arrangements/costs. Both sessions can last in the region of 4hrs and are flexible in terms of content and date.

I'd love to pick your brain. I've been following your blog for almost a year (as long as I've been blogging) and I find myself coming back to it time and time again to get my blogging fix. You have such a unique way of speaking to a reader that it's not just reading words on a page. Plus in the words of Tesco – Every Little Helps. Rhianne – xx

Wow! That sounds like an amazing prize! I would love to have you as my mentor because your blog is awesome, I love your photography, you seem really nice and knowledgeable. I really enjoy reading your blog, especially your posts on things that are less talked about (like the ghostwriting one), because your opinion is fair and you're honest. Dusty Foxes Beauty

Hi Hayley. This would be the most fantastic opportunity. I love to write and have made my blog – The Beauty Magpie – a place to express myself, but would love to make it more than that. I'd love to grasp some inside knowledge to help my blog and readership grow as well as learn from you how to deal with some sticky blogging situations I have found myself in recently! Many thanks and good luck everyone!

I would love your help! I'm trying to find a niche for myself, and while I seem to be positioning myself in a domain that is less saturated than beauty/fashion (I'm doing tech and entertainment) I'm also finding it a little lonely! So I would love to know how to pitch to other places to get exposure, and build myself a good relationship with brands that will work with my niche. My blog(it's very, VERY new!) :

Hi Hayley,Firstly thank you for taking the time out to be so generous as not so many people would do so. I have been blogging now for just under a year and as cliche as it sounds it did start of as a hobby. The main aim was to challenge myself and see what all the fuss was about, but to also help improve my overall marketing skills. After a few months in I was addicted, and shortly after bought my .com. Since then I have gone though a site re-launch and want to make this work so that it becomes more than just a part time hobby. I would really appreciate your honest feedback, as you have been there and are still there. It is really hard to know what is right and what is wrong as there are no rules (except the Advertising ones and Advertiser T's and C's). As you have pointed out in your previous posts everyone has an opinion but until you are actually doing it yourself no one really knows how much work goes into putting one post out there. I would love to hear your honest thoughts on my blog and what immediate changes I could make and how I could be more structured. I would also like your advice on how to grow my blog and plan ahead in a realistic way in 2015.My blog is Good luck to everyone who has entered :-)Aarti x

This is a great idea. I often have to mentor people within my profession and there is nothing more fullfilling then to give people the little tipps and tricks of the trade and get them of to a good start. Saying that, while i might be ready to help other in Science i am definitely in need of help myself in the blogging department. My challenges? I have always been rather in an enviroment which did not put a lot of focus on beauty products and/or fashion. While all my collegues and friends are awesome and with a unique feel of style, i have been always standing alone with my love of cosmetics. So all my beauty knowledge comes from myself and what i learned via internet or magazines which makes me feel sometimes like a fraud. My second challenge, i am not a native speaker. In fact i am a german born belgian resident who writes in english and regularily run into language and cultur issues. I do not fit blogging wise into any country really and i have found that to be difficult at times especially when aiming to become part of the blogging community. Most blogs here are written in flemmish or french. I can speak it but i cannot write in it. I can write german but i do not share the same subjects since they shop in different stores. I feel most at home at the british blogging community but obviously i am not living there either. I guess you see the issue. My third issue. I am old for a blogging beginner. I am in fact already in my late twenties (euphemism) and sometimes feel like i am to late to the party. Add to this a busy work shedule and the life of a married woman and the fact that my profession makes me a bit socially inept when it comes to non lab people ;)So here are the challenges, now to why i think you would be a good mentor for me. You are a blogger closer to my age and life stage and probably are able to understand my challenges. I also love your style. I feel that your style in make up and blogging is close to what i like for my blog. I am not a super girly pink blogger and i want the blog to reflect who i am (nothing wrong with girly pink bloggers by the way, love to read some of them, but its not me). I feel that you are not somebody who would judge me for beeing me, even when this me is not the perfectly styled model like beauty blogger. I also love your professional take on blogging and i find myself agreeing with you all the time. The last argument is maybe a weird one, but i am so in love with London and i feel there could be no better advise then from a real London lady and lover. So yes, there is a lot of challenges to work on i guess and i would love me some help and advise. While i love London and would love to meet you in London, i doubt i would be able to make it there for a meeting, though one never knows. However, i am perfectly capable of using Skype :)So i am crossing my fingers and hope :)xxxMica (Sciencekoekje)

I love that you are paying it forward as such and giving back which is great to see. I think it's important that strong , successful and experiences women share their knowledge, experiences and confidence with others to help develop them. I'd love to be the lucky one:

This is such a great opportunity! Thank you so much for putting up something like this; not many people would. I highly value your honesty and that you're not afraid of speaking your mind, nor are you a slave to brands. You make yourself respected. I want to make my blog grow (making it my full time job would be a dream, but I'm realistic and know it can be complicated), but I don't want to lose my principles on the way. I believe your honest feedback could really help me to achieve that. My site is

This is such a great idea! In the current culture where bloggers are being criticised and scrutinised so much it's nice to see you try to be so nice to your followers. I'd love to have you as a mentor. I think you've created a great brand and you've made a name for yourself always being honest and straightforward. My blog is here: Wing me a dream Only a few months old and it needs some help 🙁 x Julia

Wow, that's such an awesome prize. I'd love to have you as a mentor for 101 reasons which I won't list all of, but I really appreciate the way you conduct yourself. Yes all of your posts and reviews etc are amazing but how you handle situations, seem to have such poise and come across really considered in everything you say is something I really want to learn. I can be quite 'gun ho' sometimes and worry that that 'side' of myself sometimes comes out in my blog. If I am fortunate enough to win the prize my site is Nic xx

I'd like to start a blog, and your advice would be invaluable. I'm 52, so I hope that doesn't put you off mentoring me. I think that my age group has particular beauty, health and fitness issues that don't get mainstream coverage. I love the work that Jane Cunningham is doing with Beauty Plus and BBB, and would love to contribute to giving my generation a platform to exchange views and swap tips on improving the way we feel about ourselves. Your advice would be absolutely invaluable, and most gratefully received!

What a great opportunity, your blog was one of the first I started reading and it has been interesting to watch it grow. I have been blogging for over three years now and having moved to the Middle East from London I know my blog has suffered from losing that connection I had with readers. I would love to grow my blog if possible and your advice and experience would be invaluable. A Google Hangout session would be fab (as much as I wish I could be back in London!) My blog is

Yes please!! Myself and friend Grace are cosmetic science students at LCF, we've been pondering a blog for sometime now and would love a helping hand to kick-start it 🙂 We're currently on placement doing New Product Development for a brand and Marketing for ingredients distribution, hoping to provide a fun insight into the facts and myths behind everyday cosmetic products. Such a great idea! Oh the questions I'd have to ask you! Mainly I'd want to know what it is I'm doing wrong, and how I can improve my blog. I've been blogging for over 3 years now and lately I've noticed a drop in my views and interactions and I can't work out why. I'd love to turn my blog into a career but likewise I have no idea where to start!I'm over at 🙂

Hello HayleyI have to be honest and say that I recently discovered your blog and the moment I brosed through your impressive amount of post I was hooked! I admire the way you stay true to your own voice, you're honest and that for me is incredibly important for a blogger, because if it was any other way there wouldn't be much of a point of visiting and reading blogs! I also really enjoy the fact that you talk about brands that aren't often featured in other beauty blogs, so your content always remains unique! I've recently started blogging about my passion which is beauty and wellness and so far its been going well and my blog is growing, however nothing would make me happier than to get to pick your brain, ask you lots of questions regarding blogging, growing an audience, honesty, relationships with PR-agencies etc. You seem to be a lot more mature than most of the bigger bloggers which is why I would value your opinion, ideas and advice to the max 🙂

This would be the best Christmas present I could ever receive, I value your opinions, tips and help that you give in your blog posts so to have that on a one on one basis would be amazing. I absolutely love blogging but feel completely stuck with how to take it to the 'next level', how to push myself forward and to be honest to see if it's ever possible to turn it into a full time job for me. It's so hard to make yourself stand out in the blog world with it being very over saturated at the moment so any help at all would be brilliant.(Also I'd just the love the chance to have cake and chats with you!)Thanks for the opportunity Hayley!Ellie
