Top Hairdressers: Five Great Places To Get Your Hair Done In London

One of the most hated beauty related tasks any woman has to undertake is a visit to the hairdresser. Although it’s supposed to be enjoyable, relaxing and leave you feeling like a million bucks, that lingering appointment can cause beads of sweat and the feeling of dread. There’s nothing worse than asking for a trim and coming out with a pixie crop, or requesting subtle highlights and the result being chunky bleached sections that wouldn’t be out of place in 1992; it’s so hard to find a hairdresser that you trust, that understands you and listens to requests while providing recommendations and input. However, over the last year I’ve managed to find five fab salons that I would return to without question for everything from a restyle to a quick blowdry – here are my top five picks of the best places to get your hair done in London.

1. Gielly Green
Located a short walk from Baker Street station in the heart of Marylebone, Gielly Green is also handily located around the corner from the Chiltern Firehouse – so you can pop in for a quick cocktail to show of your ‘do on the way home. The staff are incredibly friendly, helpful and caring, really listening to your requests and taking the time to perfect your ‘do. Their salon also includes to most incredible backwash chairs which lay you completely flat to avoid that crooked neck feeling that often happens after a wash… You could find yourself having a cheeky snooze during a head massage.

2. Michael Van Clarke
A firm favoruite with London’s bloggers, journalists and celebrities, you can experience their unique ‘diamond cut’ which is constructed on dry hair to ensure a perfect finish. After visiting oodles of salons that left me with the opposite of what I’d asked for, my first experience at Michael Van Clarke was a godsend. My stylist Gustav really listened to my issues and concerns, providing me with a solution that not only ensured my hair looked fab when I stepped out of the salon, but had a plan of action for the following six months.

3. Aveda Institute
I love visiting this hive of activity not only for the hair services, but for their beauty treatments too. There’s always someone free to spend quality time on your hair, helping to teach you maintenance and blowdry techniques while you’re in the chair so you can keep it looking great between visits. If you’re concerned about chemicals in your hair products, then you can even get completely natural dyes that provide a super shiny colour result that lasts.

4. Hershesons, Harvey Nicols
I had my hair completely restyled and dyed a bright shade of red in this salon, visiting a few times to ensure the finished result was just right. I was not only impressed by the care and attention of the stylists, but the fact they all talk to eachother and come up with a creative solution that encompasses both colour and style – ensuring the result is flawless. It’s always great when you feel in safe hands when you’re undertaking such a dramatic and drastic hair overhaul.

5. Errol Douglas
I’ve spent more time in Errol’s salon than any other in London and I always know I’m in for a great experience. They’ve dyed, cut and blowdried my hair on multiple occasions, as well as fitting my most recent set of extensions. Again, I love how the stylists and colourists talk together and spend time coming up with a solution that ticks all the boxes; on my most recent visit two lovely ladies spent five hours dying and re-dying my hair to ensure a perfect result. You can’t ask much more than that!

Do you have any favourite hairdressers that you couldn’t be without? Do you loathe visiting the cutting chair for fear of a horrendous style?

I had horrible experiences with hair dressers. I once asked for highlights and in an effort to fit more customers in her shedule, she just left the bleach in way to long (the alarm clock went off a good 20 minutes before she returned) with the result of my hair beeing nearly white and really damaged. I looked like a tiger. She then told me that this is how its intended and that she would now darken them down with another dye. Suffice to say i was not happy. Another one would always wash my hair in a way that would nearly leave me in tears from the pain of her pulling at my hair, while she was chatting along with anyone in the salon but me. I am not even counting the endless hairdresser visits where i returned with a hairdo i frantically tried to restyle when i got home and which looked even crappier the day after. Also loved the fringes which would either hang in front of my eyes or fall very weirdly. Also i cannot thank the hairdresser enough which left me with a Mortica like white highlight in my fringe for my wedding.I still have not found a really good hair dresser. I wish i would live in London so i could give this a shot.

I'm really hair obsessed and I love changing my hair a lot, but going to a new salon can be scary, especially if they mess your hair up, my best haircut ever was in Toni and Guy, but as usual the best stylist leaves, I currently have a hair dresser I trust and love, I agree with you Aveda are amazing and heard Errol Douglas has a really good reputation. Barrie Stephen salons are based in Leicestershire and are wonderful. Definitely worth having the name in your memory banks if you head to the Midlands and need to look amazing.
