NEW: The Beautiful Urban Decay ‘Naked Iluminated’ Highlighter

I’m big into highlighters. So much do I love a good highlighter that I have a whole makeup drawer dedicated to some of my favorites, in every format imaginable. However, when I first glimpsed at the Urban Decay Naked Illuminated highlighter during a meeting with House of Fraser earlier this month I nearly drooled with excitement. Not only does the curved pan look amazing, but it’s packaged fabulously in a handy compact with a hidden brush compartment. This isn’t for those of you that are wary of a little sparkle and shine though, as the powder contains a serious amount of shimmer. Although it sits much more subtly on the skin than I anticipated, this is definitely one for the party season as it will help every festive fairy sparkle.

The subtle rose gold shade will work with most complexions, helping to catch the light when applied to the cheekbones and bridge of the nose. Many highlighters are a little too dark for the winter months, but this is perfectly suited to even the palest of skins; it’s almost indetectable until you move and catch a glimpse of sparkle on the skin. It adds a natural glow and aids contouring, while the shimmer would look great when worn with an otherwise understated look – I’m thinking a flick of eyeliner, lashings of mascara and a simple red lip. The powder does come away easily and leave a lot of excess in the pan, meaning you have to be careful with the brush and perfect the art of applying in small stages; because of this you also have to be cautious if taking this out and about, as you wouldn’t want the box to open in your bag and leave your filofax covered in as much Christmas sparkle as Oxford Street.

My main bugbear with this product, no matter how beautiful it is, is the fact it’s packaged in a cardboard box. I know it’s more economically friendly (and probably cheaper to produce,) but it does mean it will start looking tatty and bashed up in next to no time. As soon as you accidentally spill a drop or two of champagne in its direction it will start looking like something that’s been lingering in your makeup bag since 2012. Magnets help to lock it in place, but I’m not sure how strong they’d be when opened continuously over a long period of time. I do wish they’d packaged this in one of their iconic plastic packs for longevity and a bit more style, but nonetheless it’s still pretty fabulous. At £22.00 it’s pretty pricey for a highlighter, but it would be rude not to buy it as a Christmas gift – for yourself. What do you think of Urban Decay’s new launch?

The Urban Decay Naked Illuminated highlighter is available via House of Fraser and Debenhams, priced £22.00.

I'm not much of a fan of the cardboard box (Benefit anyone?) or UD, for that matter, but this looks really cute! x Julia | Wing me a dream

I think I did a budget buy feature on them, but you can get great ones from No7, Essence and Makeup Revolution.
