During the warmer months it’s so easy to create a radiant and glowing complexion; there’s nothing more beautiful than sunkissed skin that’s absorbed all the goodness from the great outdoors. However, come the colder months our skin is increasingly likely to look dull and flat – central heating, chilly mornings and total lack of Vitamin D can play havoc with the surface of our skin. I’m much more likely to play it minimalist on the makeup front when I’m confident in what’s underneath, but from October onwards I’m more than happy to pile on the slap and create a uniform base using all the tools at my disposal. A simple highlighter can be your best friend in the colder months, adding a touch of warmth and radiance to skin that can’t be created by anything else; traditionally it may be more of a summer product, but a stash of highlighters could be your secret weapon this winter.
Applying a shimmering powder or cream to the top of cheekbones really does create a radiant look that oozes health; we naturally associate radiance with youth and well-being, so a delicate sprinkle can really make an overwhelming difference to your look. Applying it as the final product (over your base and powder) will ensure it catches the light and blends in with the rest of your makeup; I like to sweep a little on the tops of my cheeks from the inner corner and out towards the tops of my ears. A delicate dusting is all you need (if you overdo it you could end up looking like a glitter ball, so use the ‘build-up’ technique to ensure it’s not OTT,) giving you a sexy glamous glow.
My current favourite highlighter is the Urban Decay ‘Naked Illuminated’ baked powder, offering a nude finish with just a touch of three-dimensional shimmer. However, creamy formulas like Benefit’s Watts Up and No7’s Instant Radiance Highlighter are great for those that are a little nervous about applying something shimmering to their face. The creamy formula can be dabbed on using a finger, focusing on the upper cheekbones and blending the result into the skin for a subtle finish. Bobbi Brown offer a huge selection of highlighters that also provide depth of colour, ensuring the face is sculpted to perfection; their Christmas offering combines a traditional creamy shade with a tone of pink to warm the complexion. Utterly beautiful.
To add even more warmth and depth to your look, a simple touch of highlighter down the base of the nose and under the brows will help to create subtle sculpting – without looking like a Kardashian. The key is to keep it understated and natural, like you’ve just dashed out and become a little flushed rushing for the bus. You don’t want to look like you’ve undertaken three rounds with Mike Tyson or rolled around on the Strictly Come Dancing dancefloor. A highlighter or two could really mean the difference between a good and a great party look this festive season… Investing in something shimmering will not only see you good this Christmas, but keep you looking fresh as a daisy well into the new year.
