Once upon a time Ilamasqua were a brand known for their revolutionary colours, boundary-pushing formulas and eccentric imagery. Although we could all coo over the collections, most of them weren’t exactly wearable by the masses; I for one wished continuously for more wearable shades and universal colour palettes that would be office appropriate. This year they’ve certainly delivered; firstly with their Glamore lipsticks, closely followed by a selection of nudes – and now the delightfully muted ‘Once’ collection just in time for Autumn. Described as ‘the beauty of old and new, decadent and lavish,’ the collection includes three divine Vintage Metallic Eye Shadow pots, two Sheer Lipglosses and a statement green nail polish. Basically everything you need to take you into Autumn, while still feeling like a peachy pink princess.
The Vintage Metallic Eye Shadow pots are an absolute dream, providing a long-lasting creamy texture with a ‘smudge resistant’ finish. They apply to the lid so easily, providing a subtle smokey finish and just a hint of shimmer; although they can be blended and worked into the socket, thanks to the extremely thin texture they dry almost instantly to leave a crease and smudge free finish – there’s nothing worse than when metallic shadows sit in the creases of your eye. The three colours include a delightful ‘nude’ pinky gold shade, great for using as a base colour or alone during the week, as well as a grey-green shade and metallic brown – all three are pretty awesome in my book, together providing all the colours you need to take you from one season to the next.
The two lipgloss shades look incredibly in the tube, but once applied they’re very much a love or loathe. Although I’m a big fan of nude shades, pinky tones and understated glamour, these alone have a tendency to wash me out and leave my complexion looking a little dull – however, when worn over the top of a bolder colour they bring out the tones and definitely become more wearable. Seeing as the collection is inspired by the “gentle and exquisite point when a flower starts to fade and becomes impossibly beautiful in its complex decline,” it’s no surprise these shades are a little tricky to wear alone.
The final new product in the collection is the ‘Melange’ nail polish, described as an ‘antique teal’ with a hint of gold undertone. It looks stunning in the bottle, but is a little darker when applied to the nail. However, the shade is certainly unique and definitely gives a nod to the Illamasqua collections of old; the statement combination of green and gold provide an alternative to the greige and black nails we’re all so used to in the colder months. It applies perfectly after only one coat, looking even more striking after two, while being easily removed with an express varnish remover pot – so often not the case with glitter or shimmer based colours.
This could possibly be my favourite collection from Illamasqua in recent times, including some really wearable tones while still including some slightly alternative shades that they’re so well known for. However, it’s the Vintage Metallic Eye Shadow pots that I’m totally in love with and would thoroughly recommend you check out – if there’s one product you need to pick up this Autumn, right now it’s the rustic golden teal shade that will give you the perfect statement eye or subtle shimmering finish. I’ve no doubt that this will become an Illamasqua classic, so make sure you get there first. What do you think of Illamasqua’s latest collection?
The Illamasqua ‘Once’ collection launches this week online and in-store. The Vintage Metallic eyeshadow pots cost £16.50 each, the lipgloss £16.50 and the nail varnish £14.50.
