Waking up on a Monday morning still slightly hungover from the Saturday night before, you could be forgiven for swearing at the mirror when you spot your unsightly under-eye circles. Sallow and dark skin around the eyes is a clear indication of dehydration, lack of sleep and unfortunately ageing – we lose a lot of the elasticity around the eyes as we get older, leaving us looking knackered even when we’re not. However, a little makeup artist trick that costs less than your morning coffee could be the saviour to your makeup worries. Investing in a little white, cream or delicate pink eye pencil or crayon could help to lift the eye area and brighten dull skin.
It’s simple science that light colours reflect and bring out the brightness in surrounding similar hues, which is why YSL have made a fortune from their best selling Touche Eclat highlighter. Applying a touch of brightness to the inner corner of eyes can help brighten dull tones, conceal dark circles and emphasise the whites of your eyes; the result of which is a much more ‘awake’ look that you’ll love. I have a couple of handy tools I use for this sneaky trick, including Rimmel’s Scandaleyes Shadow Stick in ‘Witness White’ (£4.49) and Essence’s Big Bright Eyes pencil (£2.49). The white colour and creamy texture helps to lift eyes and works exceptionally well with a smokey look where the lid is contoured; however, the pinky tone is perfect for creating a wide awake ‘natural’ look as it blends seamlessly with caucasian skin tones.
To fake a great nights sleep, just apply a little colour to the inner corners of your eyes (both upper and lower) and blend into the edge of the lash line. Blending is key here, or you could give the game away while looking like you’re trying a new makeup look – ensure you smudge in the colour delicately, building up the pigment as you go, for a super natural finish. I love to use these products on a daily basis, taking one with me for touch-ups on the go when I hit the 4pm slump. It’s a simple, quick and affordable way to fake looking refreshed when you’re really gasping for another coffee.
