Emergency Care: Five Lip Balms For Really Dry Lips

There’s nothing I hate more in life than incredibly dry lips (and I’m even including hayfever and hangovers.) I regularly suffer from horrendously uncomfortable lips for no apparent reason, them being zapped of moisture overnight and leaving me with a layer of crusty skin to contend with. Often they’re so uncomfortable that I simply can’t leave them ‘naked’, having to apply soothing balm every thirty minutes or so until they eventually learn to cope on their own. Although I have a tonne of different lip balms to choose from, many of them contain fragrances and ingredients that can irritate lips even more; you have to be incredibly careful and reach for something that will soothe your lips and help them recover, rather than making them even worse. With that in mind, here are the top five balms I turn to for a helping hand when I’m really in need.

1. Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm (£5.99)
I love Burt’s Bees balms as they’re made with all natural ingredients, including bees wax. However, these tinted numbers are perfect for adding a touch of colour to lips when you simply can’t reach for the gloss. They offer the same hydrating and soothing benefits as the regular balm, with a hint of colour and shine. This was my staple all last weekend when I didn’t want to leave for a big night out with no colour at all – a fab compromise.

2. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Intensive Lip Repair Balm (£17.00)
Although the original formula is great for soothing lips, this little pot has been specifically designed for the pout. It’s much lighter and has a subtler fragrance, helping to soothe and repair lips without overloading them with too much product. Packaged in a much handier and more handbag-appropriate pot than their traditional tubes, this has been somewhat a lifesaver of late.

3. Blistex MedPlus For Lips (£2.30)
Containing conditioning Jojoba Oil and Cocoa Butter, as well as menthol to soothe and cool, this provides a real ‘relief moment’ as soon as it’s applied. I don’t over-use this as the menthol can irritate if used multiple times a day, but it’s great for when your lips are feeling exceptionally sore and really need a little relief – especially early in the morning.

4. Kadalys Banana Balm (£9.95)
A recent discovery, but one that I absolutely adore regardless of having sore lips, this little tub really does smell of fresh bananas. The yellow banana musactif ingredient, castor oil and Rosa Mosqueta together provide hydration, regeneration and nutrition – everything your lips need when they’re feeling sore. It’s super light and doesn’t overload the lips, ensuring it’s a great little handbag essential for soothing lips on the go.

5. Dr Lipp Nipple Balm For Lips (£11.50)
Originally developed to help nursing mothers, this little tube contains 100% natural lanolin to soothe dry and chapped lips within seconds. It’s pretty hard when it first comes out of the tube, but you simply massage a little either between your fingers or straight onto the lips for a high shine finish that gets to work hydrating lips instantly.

Do you have any top lip balms for when you’re lips are really suffering?

I haven't tried any of the products about. I do like the Burts Bee's Acai Berry Lip Balm and if my lips are really dry the Jack Black Intensive Balm is sooo amazing! XA Topsy Turvy Blog // Casey Chieri

Yes my top lip balm is by Suncare Central… it contains spf30 and has a really pleasant vanilla smell to it. It keeps my lips soft, supple and protected from the sun. I use it morning and evening. I find all their products are amazing for both the face and the body 🙂

I've got perennially dry lips thanks to heredity and have tried everything. I like Dr. Lipp, Avene's stick but Eve Lom Kiss Mix most of all. Put it on for 5-10 minutes, wipe it off and lips are in great shape.

Nuxe Reve De Miel is my absolute go to. The only lip balm I've tried that still remains on after application the night before.Ellen Rozalia | http://www.ellenrozalia.com

When I have really dry lips, fortunately nearly only in the wintertime, I definitely go for Carmex. I tried several lip balms, but Carmex works best for me.

Carmex lip balm is the one for me too. Gives a nice tingling sensation when you put it on and not too expensive either. It comes in a tube or a pot
