Fashion Fixes: How to Give Your Old Floral Dress an Edge

With pretty patterns and delicate cuts, flowery dresses are the epitome of feminine fashion. Their multi-functional style is ideal for everything from afternoon tea with your girlfriends, to meeting your partner’s parents for the first time. The simple styling of a floral dress means there’s always more than one way to wear it; if you have one languishing neglected at the back of your wardrobe, there’s a few simple things you can do to give it a new edge. The secret to reinvention success is all about the accessories – here are four different styles to keep your old dress perfectly on-trend.

Biker Chic
Channel your inner ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ by teaming your favourite floral dress with a good pair of stylish ladies leather boots and a biker jacket.  The contrast of the dainty floral pattern against the tough looking leather makes this an effortlessly cool look, that’s surprisingly easy to pull off.  If you want to add a bit of flair, wear your hair up in a beehive and tie a scarf around it in a complementary colour, à la Amy Winehouse.

Vintage Housewife
Think less marigolds and more 60s Mary Tyler Moore – a floral dress is the perfect way to channel a demure, ladylike look. To dress yours up for an elegant lunch or theatre trip, sweep your hair into a chignon and wear your favourite court shoes, preferably in a pastel or nude shade. Add a string of pearls and delicate earrings, with a coordinated wrap in case it gets cold, and you’ve got a chic and charming vintage-inspired ensemble.

Punk Rock
Just as cool now as it was back in 70s, it’s never too late to revive a classic punk rock look. You only have to look at the selection of plaid pieces on sale on the High Street to realise that punk is very much on-trend this season, so you’ll have no problems finding the right accessories. Punk up your dress with a leather waistcoat and add some studded bracelets. Chuck a pair of bovver boots on your feet (Doctor Martens are perfect,) with a pair of mid-calf socks or black tights. Make-up should be bold and confident, think smokey eyes and red lipstick, and wear your hair messy for extra impact.

Denim Diva
Denim jackets are the perfect partner to your floral dress, and just like leather, can add a little bit of an edge to a traditionally girlie ensemble. Add a brown leather belt and a pair of brown cowboy boots for a touch of Wild West flavour. Wear your hair in a messy braid for extra cowgirl credits, and pin a floral hair-clip in the side to keep everything in place.

Floral dresses are a fashion mainstay in spring and summer, and are fast becoming a popular trend for autumn and winter too. With these tips, you can reinvent yourself every day with just one classic staple dress. What are your top tips for transforming a simple shift?
