Straightening hair has become such a fundamental part of everyone’s beauty routine that it’s hard to remember life before poker straight tresses. I was 17 when I got my first pair of straighteners, so the hours of tying my hair back (so hard my ears nearly fell off) in the attempt to dry my hair straight were gladly waved goodbye. The only problem with continual heat styling is the damage it does to hair, causing it to excessively dry and even break off. I’m guilty of forgetting to apply heat protection spray to my hair every time I use a hair dryer or straightener, so I’ve had to spend years using hair masques and applying intense treatments to restore my barnet to its former glory. However, this new straightener from Toni & Guy helps to ease the problem by making it part of the process of straightening itself. The straighteners contain a little product reservoir, so you actually put the heat protection spray into the tool itself; using a little hole you fill it up like you would a water pistol (although a lot less fun) and then it steams out the protection mist through little holes directly onto the hair as you use the plates… Genius!
The straightener itself is really easy to use, having a simple on and off switch, dialing temperature guide to find the best heat for you, as well as the facility to turn the steam on/off depending on your requirements. The plates are thick and chunky enough to get through hair without straightening the life out of it (I hate it when all volume and style is lost because the heat is too much/the plates are too thin), and my hair feels bouncy, shiny and full after using them. The steam function itself is a little strange at first, mainly because it sounds like you’re burning your hair, but it eventually it just fades into the natural motions of the straightener. I really admire Toni & Guy for realising that hair straightening causes problems and attempting to rectify them as easily as possible. I think this is a great product, really innovative and a pleasure to use; no doubt there will be similar straighteners popping up all over the shop in months and years to come. (I’ve already had a sneak preview of a very similar product from a professional hairdresser launching in 2013!) My only concern is the level of protection this actually gives to hair – at least when I’m spritzing over my barnet with a wet product I know where I’m aiming it, whereas with this you have to just hope the steam gets all your hair adequately covered with protection mist. Nevertheless, I really like these straighteners and fully intend to keep playing around until I get bored of adding in liquid to the reservoir!
The good news is that I have a pair of these to give away to one lucky person! Worth £79.99, these straighteners could be winging their way to you in time for the party season – what better way to strut into the office party than with sleek, shiny and healthy looking hair?
