I have to admit I haven’t been a huge fan of the beauty box phenomenon, mainly because the market is completely saturated and there are no new ideas or inspirational content doing the rounds. It’s the same thing month after month and it’s quickly become very dull. However, when I heard a little while ago that undoubtedly the most well known ‘box’ was teaming up with undoubtedly the most well known ‘department store’ I was a little bit excited to see what was to come. Harrods, green and gold in all its glory, has put it’s name to a limited edition Glossybox which is perfectly times for Mother’s Day. The beauty buyers at the world’s famous store have handpicked their favourite beauty products (including some that are exclusive to Harrods) for inclusion in this special box for one month only.
The box is adorned with the Harrods logo, wrapped with a beautiful golden ribbon and even includes a little Harrods sticker to keep it all tidy. Inside my box is a selection of products including Bliss body butter, Clarins body cream, ReVive eye cream, Burberry lipstick and Versace perfume. However, each box contains a selection of products at random so nobody is guaranteed to get the same one as me! Although I like the idea, the concept and the fact that Harrods are obviously trying to reach a younger and more financially independent audience, I did feel a little bit underwhelmed when I opened my box. I don’t know quite what I was expecting, but to me the box could actually have been for any retailer or any month – there was nothing that stimulated the ‘wow’ factor.
A little Burberry lipstick and a cute Versace fragrance sample is all very lovely, but for me the link with Harrods isn’t strong enough. There’s no incentive to actually go into store (a voucher code or money off voucher would’ve completed the customer journey and made Harrods some cash,) investigate the beauty department online or even join in the Harrods social media channels (which we know are both fabulous.) It’s almost like an empty promise of something extra special because it wasn’t quite thought through. The partnership may be like Chanel teaming up with Topshop, but I think there’s potential to actually grow it and make it more beneficial to everyone involved – I for one would have given this to my mum as a gift if there was a little coupon off the beauty product of her choice inside.

This will entitle you to 20% off any of the featured products when purchased on Harrods.com – so it seems they didn’t think about that after all! Good news.
