Pop starlet Rhianna has launched her debut fragrance, following in the footsteps of Britney, Christina, and more recently, Beyonce. I’m not a huge fan of the lady herself (the guys in my office can vouch for that when they attempt to put her on the music box) but I was intrigued to find out what her debut fragrance was all about. Entitled ‘Reb’l Fleur’, Rhianna has used the basis of her grandmother’s nickname for her debut; known to her family as Rebel Flower (I can’t imagine why,) this is a sweet tribute to the people that helped her get to where she is today.
The bottle of the fragrance is surprisingly demure, sophisticated and simple – something I wouldn’t be embarrassed to have on my dressing table. Most celebrity fragrances are tacky and in the cheapest bottle possible, but it seems that Ri-Ri really did spend time nurturing the development of the product like a flower itself. She was involved in every element of the scent development, picking floral and sweet scents that meant something to her: “The scent opens with plump, delicious fruits, red berries, purple plums and juicy, ripe peaches. These combine with heart notes that open into a lush hydrid hinting at island life, subtle yet intoxicating, blossoming with sumptuous florals, a passionate melody of Hawaiian Hibiscus flower, violet, tubercose and coconut water. Definitely sexy, the base notes linger, a beguiling, sensual mélange. Vanilla, patchouli, amber and musk become a sultry chorus striking an unforgettable, emotional chord.”
The scent isn’t as sickly sweet as I imagined – much subtler than the Britneys and Christinas adorning the shelves of our local fragrance shops. There are still undernotes of sweetness, but it’s brought to life with much deeper notes that make me think this is very much an evening scent. It will appeal to those of you that are sold on sweetness, but not offend us types that like something a little deeper to our perfume. A surprisingly good start from the red haired one… Plus she’s already got scent two in the pipeline, if rumours are to be believed.
