Be Proactiv

Adult acne, if you suffer from it, can be one of the most distressing, embarrassing and confidence-draining things to happen to you, other than weeing yourself in public. My good friend Gemma has suffered with red, blotchy, spotty skin since she was a teenager and it’s never seemed to budge. I told her to religiously cleanse and tone, but this only seemed to work for a little while and now she’s back to being spottier than her 16 year old brother. At 27 with two children this is making her life pretty awkward and uncomfortable. She’s literally tried pretty much everything going, including prescription medication, but nothing has seemed to work thus far. Here’s a few pictures of her skin as it currently stands and I have to say a huge thanks to her for agreeing to share them with us… she told me she was really embarrassed to send them!

As you can see, her skin is not in great nick. For this reason she’s agreed to take the plunge and put celebrity favourite Proactiv to the test. It’s a favourite of Jessica Simpson, Katy Perry, Avril Livigne and even teeny bopper Justin Beiber (although don’t let that put you off) so it must do something right. Gemma is trying the full system, which includes a cleanser, toner, day and night moisturiser plus a clay mask, for the next few months to see if it really can make a difference to the state of her skin.

Renewing Cleanser – This mild, oil-free formula gently cleanses your skin, while tiny exfoliating grains smooth away dead skin cells so they can’t clog pores. Salicylic Acid helps to remove existing impurities, so blemishes fade away.

Revitalising Toner – Our gentle toner helps balance skin tone and lift away old, dead skin cells to reveal the fresh, radiant skin beneath. The Revitalising Toner removes excess oil while soothing your skin with natural botanical extracts.
Repairing Day Lotion – Specially formulated to keep breakouts under control throughout the day, this light lotion is great for the entire face. Salicylic Acid gets to the source of the problem to dry up blemishes and help prevent blackheads and whiteheads from forming.

Repairing Night Lotion – Our gentle Night Lotion is formulated with Salicylic Acid to help prevent future breakouts while you sleep, plus Retinol to equalise skin tone and reduce the appearance of pore size. Also contains Vitamins D and E which are designed to help alleviate the visible effects of free-radicals caused by sunlight.

Refining Mask – This rich deep-cleansing mask is formulated with Sulphur, a blemish-fighting ingredient that penetrates pores where blemishes begin. Cool Kaolin helps absorb surface oils while our special formula is designed to ease and soothe the skin. This mask also helps clear blemishes, leaving your skin looking fresh and radiant.

Three days in and she already says her face is as smooth as her baby’s bottom, so it’s looking like there may be hope! Stay tuned because Gemma will be updating me once a week on her progress so we can really see if Proactiv is as proactive as it claims!

I must say, I'm a makeup artist myself and see a lot of women every day with no makeup on and at least 50% of them suffer from some degree of acne, and that's women of all ages. It's very brave of your friend to bare her naked face to the cruel world of the internet but to be honest her skin is really not that I've seen a lot worse. Just to let her know and any other women suffering with acne out there, you are not alone!! At least half of all the women you see today will have the same problem, they're just covering it with makeup!!

My friend tried proactive because even I had heard so many good things about it.HOWEVER, it did nothing to her skin. So she's getting her money back (as it's not cheap). I reckon it depends on your skin type & everyone must have different hero skin products to suit their own skin… I wish there was just one for all haha :)Kaushal xx

Umm is it just me or actually ….her skin doesn't look that bad at all!?Certainly no worse than average and definitely better than mine and I don't even consider mine 'that bad'.

I agree with Georgie. I think her skin looks the way mine does about once a month. She doesn't seem to have any scarring either.Nonetheless, if she's upset about her skin, I do sympathise and hope this will work for her. Has she tried seeing an endocrinologist?

She'll be happy to hear that you don't think her skin is that bad, but for her it really is. I can completely understand as she feels horrid about it and it really affects her – there may be much worse out there but to her it's a huge problem. She does have a lot of scarring and redness too, so we'll see what happens!
