This cute little brand is the brainchild of Poppy, a girl who was obsessed with the way lipstick made her feel… and a woman who turned it into a business. Poppy launched her own range of lipsticks twenty years ago and has been on the continual search for the best lip colours she can produce. Lipstick Queen is a sweet collection of lip colours that come in innovative packs, colours and styles that really stand out amongst the million and one other lipglosses in my collection.
The Big Bang Illusion Gloss comes in a test tube (genius) and apparently contains the perfect combination/ratio of shimmer to shine to make your lips appear plumper. It’s nice to have something that’s not just ‘another lipgloss’ and the pack makes it a little bit fun and cheeky. The formula itself isn’t anything revolutionary – a smooth, non-sticky, shimmery gloss that does make your lips look a bit luscious – and doesn’t have a particularly outstanding scent (it reminds me of Rimmel, which probably isn’t a good thing when it costs £20!), but it is cute and I do like it. The range contains only eight shades and they’re all fairly neutral, so this is definitely a day wear product.
I’ve also been sent the Jean Queen lipstick to try and this really made me chuckle… “Jean Queen is especially created with a sheer pink tint to offset the denim in your jeans, suits all ages and skin tones and lights up your whole complexion. Formulated with special emollients and moisturising ingredients the Jean Queen lipstick glides on easily and has just the right amount of matte and shine making lips contrast with the matte appearance of denim.” A lipstick to match your jeans?! Now I’ve heard everything! The thing is though I really like this lipstick… even if it had nothing to do with jeans; I can’t see me ever matching my lipstick to my jeans anyway, unless I channelled my 2001 look of patchwork jeans, jean jacket and jean flat cap. Nice.
The lipstick itself is in a really good quality pack – metal, sturdy, embossed with the name inside and out and even a little ‘made by Poppy’ stamp. The lip colour is a very sheer pinky shade that I can imagine suiting everyone from Kate Moss to Pat Butcher, but that’s because it’s very neutral and just enhances the colour of your natural lips. Your lips do feel quite moisturised and the formula glides on easily, almost like a lipbalm instead of a lipstick, so this is a winner for me. I’d really like to try some of the other lipsticks they have on offer as I think this is a great little product that at £15 is worth the investment.
I love finding unique brands that not a lot of other people have and Lipstick Queen is definitely one of those. The products are cute, good quality and not that expensive… plus there’s an added element of quirkiness and fun. I know from seeing the products in Space NK (that’s where you can buy them FYI, as well as online) that there are a lot of really deep colours and bright reds, but it’s nice to see some wearable shades too. These would make ace pressies for your buds this festive season… I know my girls would love to get these in their stocking, even if they don’t wear them with their jeans!
